My cat has been monitored for hyperthyroidism for several months, and continues to have results that are only borderline high. But treating with methimazole would be difficult, because it would be hard to get a dose low enough since it's so powerful. This is particularly important because she also has kidney disease, and we have to be vigilant that her T4 doesn't swing too low and cause further kidney damage.
My vet has prescribed Chinese herbs as a compromise for now -- specifically Hyper Jia Bing aka Jia Kang Fang. I understand that herbs can't substitute for methimazole or other treatment for hyper-t, hyper-t is one of those diseases where holistic treatment is rarely, if ever, successful by itself. But because of the extreme mildness of her case and the concern over protecting her kidneys, we figured Chinese herbs were the best option for now, at least until the hyper-t worsens enough that methimazole treatment would no longer be too powerful.
Just wondering if anyone else has done this, and what kind of results you had. I'm hoping to see a mild reduction in her T4 level. She's at 3.2, and should be around 2.5, so we're looking at a very slight reduction.
Thanks for any info.
