Cervical dysplasia is abnormal cells that within the lining of the cervix, this is what a pap smear is checking for when it is performed. It is caused by HPV and it is sometimes referred to as precancerous cells. However, it is important to know that while many women may develop cervical dysplasia (or precancerous cells) not all dysplasia will necessarily progress into cancer. Since it is impossible to know who will progress and who won't it is important to either monitor the lesion with regular follow ups, HPV testing and/or colposcopies or have it removed.
You will likely receive the results from the colposcopy within a few days. (Biopsy results are usually about 3 days) and then you will know if the abnormal pap was due to the infection of if it is due to dysplasia.
What were the results of the HPV test? (HPV is not tested through regular STD tests, it is only ran through pap smears and usually not until you are older as most younger women will test positive anyway.) If the result of the biopsy from your colposcopy confirms dysplasia then that would have been caused by HPV. *Usually* the pap and the colposcopy have similar results. IE: A pap result of LSIL usually will coincide with a mild dysplasia of CIN1, HSIL on a pap will usually either be a CIN2 (moderate) of CIN3 (severe) dysplasia through a colposcopy. Given your age, if you do have either CIN1 or CIN2 then it shoudl be monitored and not excised as both these levels of dysplasia in women under 21 will often regress on it's own but it will be important to keep up with regular follow ups if the colposcopy does confirm you have cervical dysplasia.
YES I HAD ALL STD TESTS AND YES THEY SCHEDULED A COLPOSCOPY FOR NEXT FRIDAY N SHE SAID IT WASNT AN STD NOR HIV BUT THEY MAY BE LYIN BECAUSE THE LADY DIDNT TELL ME AALL THIS WHEN I WENT BACK FOR MY BV TREATMENT SO ITS ALL IN THE AIR...IM ONLHY 17 ALSO..
What exactly were the results of your pap? There are many possibilities that can cause an abnormal pap - including an infection or dysplasia. Did they perform an HPV test along with the pap? Are you scheduled for a colposcopy?
