abnormal pap test

my daughter is 18 and just had her second pap test.  The first one was a year ago and everything was fine.  Her second one was in February and we just got the results back and there was abnormal cells.  She has also been bleeding a lot in between periods and I was wondering if this has anything to do with the abnormal pap test?  She switched birth control so that is what we thought it was but now I'm not sure.  She had her period for about the whole month of January and started a week before she was suppose to this time and she will continue to have it through her normal menstrual time.  Has anyone else out there had anything similar? She has an appoinment for a colposcopy.  Could this be something serious?

You don't alway's contract the virus by sexual contact.... It is possible that if she's not sexually active, then something else could possibly be going on, but if she is sexually active and having unprotected sex then she is at risk... She really needs to see about getting the Gardisal shot.... I am not trying to scare you, but abnormal bleeding followed by an abnormal pap, could possibly mean cervical cancer... That's exactly how my Mom was diagnosed.. She started out by having abnormal periods, and then she eventually had an abnormal pap and was diagnosed with cervical cancer.... Please, let me know how she does. PM me if you'd like.... I have a lot of experience in stuff like this.

Has she been sexually active?  Abnormal paps are usually due to HPV but not always.  When they did her pap, did they test for HPV?

It's not unusual for a 19 yr old to have bleeding between periods since her body is still working out it's cycle.  That is most likely hormonal.

Please know that HPV is extremely common and she most likely would have been exposed at some point anyway.  The dr is doing the right thing by checking her further with a colposcopy.  She should also look into getting the Gardisal vaccine.
