hysterectomy for fibroids

I am 51 and haven't had a period for 5 months.  Three years ago I had UAE for fibroids causing severe bleeding.  Suddenly, several weeks ago I started having burning pain which sometimes went into my lower back.  It was discovered I had a 7 cm fibroid.  I have no bleeding at all this time.  My GYN wants to do a vaginal hysterectomy but I was wondering if I could have another UAE instead.  OR... maybe I could do nothing (except take pain medication) with the expectation that menopause will eventually take care of this?  I don't have constant pain, just discomfort from time to time and occasional severe pain.  I'm wondering if I could just "wait it out"?  Thank you.

  Hi, Kathy,
Just wanted to weigh in about "waiting out" fibroids. That's what I did, too. Every six months I had an ultrasound to determine the size of my fibroids. I was also entering
menopause and was told that the fibroids would probably shrink.
In the final six months before my hysterectomy, my fibroid grew from 9cm to 19cm.
Unfortunately for me, at that size a vaginal hysterectomy wasn't even possible anymore.
In retrospect I wish I hadn't waited, yet I guess that fibroids and menopause are an odds
game, and I lost, LOL.
Feel great since my hysterectomy in 2006 and I sure don't miss the discomfort, bleeding issues, and waiting and watching. I wish you the best!

Hi Id advis you get one more drs opinion make sure its a gyno not a reg dr...yes you have options...personally if I knew I had a 7 inch fibroid pressing on my vertebrae Id ask for a ct scan to see exactly whats going on..that fibroid could possibly do damage to nerves on the spine.

I get your problem your 51 you gotta be into early starges of menopause , remember it can be up to a ten year procedure. There are medications that can put you into a chemically induced menopause and yes in theory the fibroid should go away.

understandable to need pain meds for now and after surgery they are so addictive I would not advise just taking them until menopause is naturally complete.

ask your dr why he can not do another albation? could well be cause of the position of fibroid and Im glad your not bleeding but this is in a touchy spot be real careful perhaps consider getting a Neurologist opinion too...having any numbness,,tingling on the feet, hands? it would likely be lower extremities cause thats what lower spine nerves correspond with/.
