salpingo-oophorectomy or not?

I am going to have a hysterectomy soon, but I need to decide if it should be a salpingo-oophorectomy or not.  I've been having bleeding problems.  To be exact, I have been having a period every two weeks.  I have also had dysplagia and now have a cyst on one of my ovaries.  The cyst may be nothing to worry about, but am not sure.  Also, if it does go away on it's own, there is definitely a possibility that one or more will come back.  What should I do?

Hello tammy my story is a long one and you can read the whole thing in my journal I kept here for a long time. In april of 2008 I had a D and C for heavy bleeding. I still continued to have bleeding and pain issuses after my D and C and went back to the Dr who instisted I get a Depo shot. I never got the depo shot and ended up being Dxed with breast cancer in June of 08. In July of 08 I had a bilatteral mastectomy and a TVH in one surgical procedure. I had a large Dermiod cycst on my right ovary which the Dr who did the D and C knew I had but left it there.
My family history pionts to heridatary BC I have been in contact with a genitic  Dr and need to be tested as it would help my 34 year old daughter decide if she needs to have a preventive Histerectomy as she had lumpectomy done late winter of this year. Knowing your family medical history gives a good idea as to what you can do to prevent anything serious happening to you. Blessing and take care sharlene Lee

HI lADIES.  well I got a story almost like the both of you...long Ill shorten it...I had a hysterectomy 95 BEGGED dr to remove left ovary had a big cyst on it for a year it was trips back and forth to er,,,,so finally in 86 I had a BSO...I could have left health right ovary but decided not to cause its hard to catch ovarian cancer wo a pap which ya really cant get w/o a cervix...They can give a pap to check for vaginal cancer (very rare)

Ovarian cancer when found past stage one is hard to beat. I think it really depends on the type of cyst..yup mine came back time after time. painlevels 7-9.

Having your ovaries removed is a very big decison you will be thrown into a surgical menopause it may be easy not too many symptoms or it may be hard night sweats, emotions out of control, hot flashes, no desire for sex.

here is the good news Bio Identical  hormone replacement can cover all of that,,,its possible to take 1-5 times to get the right cocktail for your system but it exists for all of us.

I got it right the first time Vivelle dot (just estrogen) I took it for a year ...at first I had horrid night sweats and hot flashes...now no sweats ever just a occasional rare night sweat.

good luck cherie

You and I have almost identical stories :)

Hysterectomy is a huge step for bleeding only though. I'm assuming you've tried birth control pills to help with the bleeding? I had a D and C done which helped with the bleeding, is this something you've discussed with your GYN as well?
I had a cone biopsy when I was in my 20's for dysplasia and since that time my uterus was extremely painful to touch. Also, I've had ovarian cysts since I hit puberty and when they were enlarged or busted it was very painful too. The endrometriosis was the final straw fro me though.
Anyhow, I'm rambling....After my partial hysterectomy the cyst remained on my ovaries but are not as much an issue anymore and most of my pain is now gone. I chose to keep both ovaries; although, if your cyst issues are severe, then a salpingo is definitely something to consider. But it sounds like cyst are not your primary issue.
Hopefully you'll get a large feedback from the community on women who have had the salpingo and can tell you their story as well. Good luck to you!
