need advice about fatty liver

I had an ultrasound and CT Scan that revealed an Fatty Liver. My OB/Gyn wants me to go see an Internist....he is the one whp ordered the test due to my complaints of tenderness and swelling in my upper abdomen.

My question is does a fatty liver mean enlarged liver, do they go hand and hand? Also, has anyone tried taking Milk Thistle for this.

Thanks in advance for any advice~

I am an 32 year old Indian male and currently living in Ukraine. I have been eating food with reasonable amount of Indian spices like other million Indians eat.  ...  [More]

Throughout my life, I have not tasted alcohol, never smoked, did not chew tobacco nor was exposed to any kind of drugs for pleasure.

I have a clean medical history other than having appendicitis at the age of 20, and never had any kind of pains after that.

12 months ago, I was infected with Jaundice (Hepatitis A). Last month, I had a mild liver pain for 2 days, and after that I started drinking some kind of herbal tea prepared particularly for liver healthiness, this tea is widely administered by the doctors here. Since I started having this tea, I never had any kind of liver pain after that.

While I started having this tea, I cut down on all food containing fats, meat and so on as recommended to keep the liver healthy.

For the last 2 weeks I am regularly eating Buckwheat as its protein has been found to bind cholesterol tightly. It is being studied for reducing plasma cholesterol in people with an excess of this compound.

2 days ago, I had some old buckwheat and I am sure it was too old to eat, but still was negligent while having it. 2 hours later, I vomited it completely, and I found blood stains in it. Since then I have a mild chest pain, and I find some blood in my spit.

Kindly advice me what do I need to do to diagnose my problem and undergo treatment.

Thanks in advance.

Gerry

Hi ,
Just a little information about Fatty liver
It  can cause mild inflammation of the liver and elevated AST/ALT.
The normal treatment is weight lose exercise and most important controlling diabetes if you are diabetic and lowering your cholesterol and triglyceride.
Most people with Fatty liver never even know they have it and live normal lives, However about 20% will go on to develop NASH ( Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis ) steato ( Fat )
hepatitis ( inflamation )
About 10% of theses people will develop cirrhosis.
If you continue to feel bad you should ask to be referred to a hepatologist . They can not tell if you have simple fatty liver or the more dangerous NASH with out a liver biopsy.
I waited and ended up with cirrhosis,
Take care of you

Hi my sister's friend had a fatty liver and the doctor put her on a strict  special diet and her liver improved I believe; therefore I do believe a fatty liver can improve with the proper diet and so forth. Unfortunately I'm not sure if a fatty liver means a enlarged liver; but the good news is a fatty liver can improve with the right steps. I would also recommend reasearching the internet for more informaton on a fatty liver. Also if you can afford it there are forum doctors on here that can also give you medical advice. I wish I could afford it I would definitly use them as a source of advice but right now I'm broke; but if you can afford it a doctor's advice may give you some peace of mind. I hope everything goes well for you and you find the answers you are looking for. God bless you and take care.
