Can you tell the difference between someone that got lung cancer from smoking and one that gets it from asbestos exposure?

My mother worked for Hershey for 35 years and died of lung cancer about 4 years ago. Since then the place where she worked has closed and the city of Reading has tried to buy the area to build more schools. When they canceled the deal to buy the land they said it was because there was Asbestos and benzene on site. Although my mother was a smoker for many of the years while she worked there, I was wondering if it was possible to determine if these toxins helped to shorten her life?

Hi,

Asbestos tends to involve the lining of the lung and this is really a different cancer called mesothelioma. This can be differentiated by a pathologist from a lung cancer that grew outwards towards the lining of the lung. The pattern of growth is also somewhat different. If we are strictly talking about lung cancer, the differentiation is based on whether the cancer has small cell features. The origin is not really important in determining treatment options, and hence, there is no routine testing done to perform this function of differentiation. Stay positive.
