That is tough as over time, much like when you have a baby, you do tend to forget the intenseness of the pain.  For me, without a doubt, it would be my total colectomy in an emergency surgery after my bowel perforated due to ulcerative colitis.  It was very touch and go as to whether I would make it.  I was in the ICU for 4 weeks.  When I woke up after the surgery I couldn't talk as I had a breathing tube down my throat.  I was in intense pain and couldn't tell anyone.  Whenever my family would jiggle my bed at all it sent me into agony.  Thank goodness my SIL noticed my reaction and called to the doctor's attention.  They had a port in my chest for my meds and nourishment and it wasn't sewn in properly.  I was getting no pain relief at all.  Such a nightmare.

Trudie, that is A-W-F-U-L !!!  No, it's worse than awful.  WOW.

Besides having my 3 children naturally (all 9 lbs and over), I guess mine would be my knee injury and 5 subsequent surgeries.  The initial injury was probably the most excruciating - when I was running down the basketball court with possession of the ball and my knee blew with no warning.  Yep.  That would be it.

Ladies-to those of you who had children, I've heard that nothing is more painful than natural childbirth.  Is this true???  I don't know myself, because I don't have any kids!  Just curious!!  =)

Treatment for rectal cancer!  The chemo and radiation were horrible, the first surgery was worse (Cherie you are SO right about bowel sugrery!), but the very worst of all was the second surgery to reverse the ilesotomy.  I had an anesthesia failure during surgery which means I was awake and able to feel the surgery but was unable to speak or move so the surgeon did not know it.  That was the worst!  I did not want to make April more frightened last week so I did not mention it on the ansethesia thread, but that was the worst ever!!!

WOW this would be a toss up from having my C-section from my son or the Endemetriosis that lead to my Hysterectomy. Both C-section and Hysterectomy was painful but I think the Endometriosis was ten times worse.

Mostly I don't have a lot of pain, but I have two nagging things...first is lower back just wants to seize up at the most inopportune moments and I have a heel spur that drills me every time I take a step...

I too did the natural childbirth thing...It was only 6 hours...hurt like heck, but doable....at least you know there is an end to the pain coming.

That's true...at least that pain does come to an end and there is a reward at the end of it all. 6 hours...lucky you. My first was 13 hours.

It was short lived but some type of nerve pain from a back molar that shot like lightening bolt through my upper body and I tasted the metal from a filling -- I thought I died or was being electrocuted and almost had husband call 911.  Turned out that same nerve problem was responsible for an eye that would get stuck open and would not close .. it was scary but all related to that deep deep dental cavity .. once fixed all the other symptoms went away and I even escaped root canal.

I've had kidney stones, gallstones and surgical pain as well as giving birth to 4 beautiful kids .. but that nerve was the worst ever and 2 of my babies were 'au natural from start to finish.

without a doubt it would have to be when i was there for the birth of my grandson and watching my daughter going through hard labour. i would of did it for her if i could of lol. is most painful to watch and know our children are in pain and not be able to do anything about it. and zodiacqueen, yes natural child birth hurts. my pain came with the back labour i had, not delivery. back labour has got to be worst labour. but its all i know so, hard to judge. but luckily for us most physical pain is forgotten to some degree. if it wasnt the human race would no longer exist lol

Oh gosh, it's  toss up between,  the last baby I had naturally (no time for pain relief there!) He was 10lb 9oz and I was actually booked in for a Caeser for the next day. His shoulders were bigger than his head, which is NOT supposed to happen! I blacked out right when the doc stuck his hand inside to release a shoulder then slide him out.
Then the abscesses on my teeth...they are always a joy..NOT.
Then I think the searing knee pain for over 3 years. I thought I had bone cancer! It would radiate up my thigh bone all night, I could never sleep!
Then there are others that could all take equal billing. But I think the worst pain is heartache. Man that never goes away. Like walking around with a knife stuck in your chest.

I also forgot to add, childbirth being at the top of my pain list, I had to have 3 teeth removed before and with 2 of them I got a dry socket. (No blood was going to that area to heal it) Talk about painful!!!! I took an entire bottle of Advil within 2 days and no pain relief whatsoever. I didn't know if I was just experiencing the pain from having a tooth pulled but it was seriously painful. My dentist had to pack the area where the tooth was pulled (ahhhh) with a gauze and special medication...(talk about painful) and leave it for a few days and then had to remove it! No numbing there either...ouch!!!

be really careful in the future, its better to ask for narcotics than take that much advil or any otc pain med, not trying to sound mean or such, but your liver is precious, it could have been lost from that much meds in short period of time,, of corse then again maybe it was a small bottle IDK.

seems tooth problems are commonly mentioned on here as a top pain, as well as bowel pain as the worst ones. interesting answers from all

I had both types of labour with my 3 kids and I can tell you that being induced hurt worse than going through the back labour with my daughter.

If I had to do it all over again I would though!!

I was gonna say my Ear surgery but then Chantal reminded me of getting my wisdom taken out!! OMG!! I know now why i spent my whole life NOT going to the dentist!! It was excruciating pain!! My gums grew over the bottom wisdom teeth and the top ones grew in sideways!! They had to cut my gums the two times i had to go one time for the left and one time for the right side!! The first time was horrible they cut my gum and i felt like i had burning popcorn in my mouth (did i forget to mention i hate ALL popcorn) so i nearly came off up off the chair the nurse had to hold me down!! and then the fun part comes with the socket thing it was my first dentist visit EVER and i told my boss i couldnt go in cus i cleaned offices and they said i had to go NO excuses so i lost the thing or however you say my mom told me i forgot but cus i lost it bending down cleaning bathrooms and picking up trash i spent the next 4 days in AGONY!! It was 4th of July weekend and every1 was closed!!
2nd time was not any better the dr was rough and yanked really hard!! And i got stitches in my mouth!! I would up taking my whole bottle of Loratabs in the 2 days i had off work!! AND they left a piece of bone in their so every now and then it pokes me and causes pain!!
And the best part of getting my wisdom teeth out is I can NO longer chew gum!! Any movement of my jaw for too long of a time and it just kills me!!

Other than it would be my ear surgery it was not fun!! I slept for 4 days after it!! I had stitches top to bottom of my ear!! My neck was held turned where they needed it for a whole 6hrs!! I remember going to church not long after wards and some1 accidentally bumped my ear i fell to the ground screaming in pain!! It really REALLY hurt!! And my neck muscles were super weak i could barely lift my head in the tub to wash my hair!! And even now my neck can get creaked really easily!!

Oh yes I know...it was awful! And it was a smaller bottle, thankfully. I will NEVER do that ever again. lol. I hate taking pain meds or any pills for that matter and I do believe my liver is very precious, so hopefully it didn't affect it too much. I was just in so much pain and was told I could take 2-3 every 4 hours. If something like that every comes up again, I will be taking a good pain med instead of advil. I hate the dentist!!

goku....that reminds me. The other tooth I had pulled out, had 2 remnants of bone left in them. My dentist couldn't do an x-ray because I think I had just found out I was preggo and couldn't find the bone. so I was in pain from that for a week and finally did my own surgery. I got the tweezers out and sterilized them and started digging...gross I know..but after much crying I found the 2 pieces and got them out! No more pain after that thankfully! The things we go through! It's crazy.
