When it comes to PC gaming the ideal is to upgrade every 3 years, and I'm currently at 2.55 years for the 'core' of the system (motherboard/processor). Upgraded my video card today and added another hard drive to keep up with the growing size of games (15 gigs just for Empire, released this week).
That said, I have 4 other fully functioning computers within 10 feet of me from the last decade. Add 1 that's got a weird glitch would make 5 if I could technically keep it running. The newest 3 of those 5 computers are assembled from components that I spent a month researching to make sure they were the perfect choice. Not sure why I keep them around, but I know that the only component I ever permanently parted with (a video card) I regret selling. I'll loan parts to friends when they need them now, but that's about it.
Getting emotionally attached to computer hardware is a lot like getting attached to cars...
Bought ours Christmas 07. Nice Dell desktop with flatscreen that is also widescreen.
I am not sure, I have had it re-made several times and now it is fully customized. So, I would say that if you go by the last time I had it completely upgraded, it would be around 4 months old. I have had a computer since 2001 however.
To tell you how old my compter is I'd have to cut it open and count its rings....
I voted three years. It is well maintained and still performing excellently for my personal and work usage.
Mine is about 10 months old
My daughter killed her laptop and I inherited it. After some CPR it's running pretty good.
My desktop is a desktop dinasour, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
I am probably the only one left running IE 6.0 .. refusing to upgrade on this PC to 7.0 LOL!
And hoping never to upgrade to Vista anytime soon.
3 Years. In dog years, that makes him (Bob) 21!
Moses brought it down off the mounatin with him
Hi, Commodore 64 speaking here...cough cough... just kidding.
Mine is 4 years old exactly and no reason in sight to get rid of it despite heavy use.
You should get to know my mom. We have kept most of our computers, even after they quit working. We had one we named "Slow boat" and that was an old Packard Bell from ?? I know the early 1990's. It was kind of a tragic loss because we had a lot of old DOS games installed on it like Rampage (good memories of being the wolf smashing down buildings and eating people, yum) and Life and Death (a mock operation, pulling out someone's appendex, mostly killing people in the process, fun)
And a number of other cool really old games. Oh and it had windows. Windows 3.5, that is. Anyone remember that? One of my favorite windows games was SimAnt. I also played Sim City 2000 at school on their old computers.
My mom collects computers. One of her hobbies is to fix them up and repair them. One of the things she hopes to do is build her own computers if she hasn't built a few already. She told me if mine is to give out she will likely provide me with a new one.
my lap tops 6 mths or so old and I love it its my favorite thing...dont leave home with out it lOL.
I have new model computers, the problem is I am old and this new technology warps an old brain! lol
My laptop is a year old. It's my second one and I've had about 6 desktops. I had to be forced into a laptop....... NEVER thought I would like it......now I don't like the desktops. I like to move around.
where is all of the above? I build my first computer with transistors, resistors and capacitors for the JR high science fair in 73. I found a "new book" in the library that showed how to build a computer that would add and subtract. My Dad bought the parts and we worked together building it, I won first place.
I am a true geek and have saved my old computers and have may as far back as my first XT. Anyone need a motherboard of 5 1/4" floppy drive?
Of course I like the newest and the best too, laptops more than desktops.
Mine is a year old this month! I fix computers and also know how to build them but to lazy. By the time I get home I don't want to work on another computer let alone my own. I bought mine but already looking to get another one.
mine is a year old...but have had several for years...

Mine is about a year old..........
my bf just built us a new computer about 6 months ago so still new and doing great lol
Swampy,
We do groceries every week. That's how often we get a computer LOL. No seriously, my husband doesn't like it when a computer is already 2-3 years old. I love electronics. Computers, cell phones, you name it, we like to have the latest technology. I think the industry makes electronic equipments with one purpose (make it last 3-4 years to make you buy another one again) You know, to keep the business going. IMO. I can tell the difference when my computers have reached the 2 year point. No matter what brand, Dell, Gateway, HP, there is a significant difference when these computers get to be 2-3 years old. They start crashing, get slow, the OS is more prone to get viruses, and overall they become less reliable.
I want to get me a blu-ray... :)
