New driving laws!

Ok so I heard on the news yesterday that Texas has implamented a new law requiring 16 year olds to have more driving experience before being allowed to get a driver's license. I am ok with this but what I don't agree with is that they get stricter every year with 16 year olds driving but don't do anything about the ones that are to old to be driving.

I think that once someone turns 70 they should have to take a drivers test with an officer at least every two years. I say this because I have been ran off the road because of elderly people who are in my lane going the oppisite direction. My DH had to hit the ditch which in turn he hit a sign with him and my kids in the car because an elderly lady turned the corner but ended up in his lane while going around the curve. She didn't even stop!

Then again this weekend I was on the shoulder of the road because another elderly lady did the same thing to me. Turned the curve but ended up in my lane while she was doing it.  I am fighting right now to get my grandpa's keys taken from him because he no longer has any depth perception.

So if the laws are going to get stricter on young drivers then they should also get tougher on elderly that should no longer be driving.

What is everyone else's opinion on this?

my father is 82, and in very good health for his age...walks a couple of miles everyday, plus rides his exercycle five miles a ay..but he will be the 1st one to tell you his reflexes have slowed way down, plus has trouble seeing....I drive almost everywhere we go, the only time he drives is during daylight hour and when I am not there to drive him

the 16 to 18 year olds should have much stricter laws they should have to follow..I know I am not too old to remember what it was like to be that age and driving...back in them days we didn't have cell phones to be texting and talking while driving...

That is my thought on it as well.  I am begging my mom to take my grandpa's keys away. I play stocker and follow him the his dr. appointments and dentist appointments to make sure he makes it safely.  I have told her many of things that he has done that should stop him from driving but she keeps saying she can't do it.

The last time I was in the drivers license department their was this little old lady and her husband there trying to get her license renewed. The woman could not pass the test with her glasses or without them and kept swearing there was nothing wrong she could see. The lady told her if she would go to her eye doctor and get this form filled out and bring it back in to them then they could renew her license. To me that should have been a sorry but you no longer get to drive!

In Australia you can get a doctor to sign a form to say the elderly person is no longer capable of driving. I am not sure if you can do that in USA. I know I see many oldies thinking they can drive coz they have done so for many years, but they fail to realise their ability to react and to see clearly peripherally decreases with each year.
I agree there ought to be some testing done for older people. I know when I get older I would not want to put others in jeopardy and would like it if my kids told me to 'pull over' permanently.

Ok after this morning I had to get on here and tell you what happened. First I was stuck behind a line of cars because the old man in the leading car was doing 45 in a 70 and let me explain where I live we only have two lane roads. One heading in one direction the other one in the other directions. No four lane highways to get around people. Just a small town road. So to pass the man would have been dangerous. Now saying that what did some young teenage punk in a new mustang do???? He passed this whole line of cars in a no passing zone on the Whitney Da m! How stupid is that. So first we have the old guy (who I know was old because he finally stopped at a store across the damn and got out of his car) who is doing 45 in a 70 and then we have this young teenager barely old enough to drive as he appeared to me putting everyone's life in danger so that he can pass everyone.

Believe me I was just as frustrated over going slow as him but I am not going to do something stupid to get around him just wait until I have a clear oppurtunity. Which the da m was not that.

Sorry had to vent my roadrage! lol

I agree with the cell phones being dangerous. You add teenagers and cell phones and you get the equilvalent to a drunk driver. Well maybe not that bad but still horrible.

They do have laws against cell phones and strict laws on the teens. What I want is strict laws on elderly as well.

Well I live in the elderly capitol of the world here and I have to agree about the elderly and driving. They do not have the reflexes they once did and the doctors usually have them pumped with prescription meds, and all is legal! Go Figure!  But I also have a problem with teens acting like cars are toys and the rest of the population with the cell phone stuff which in my opinion is the most dangerous group of all!  It is just plain dangerous out there these days!

I cant let this one go...never mind the 16 year olds..never mind the elderly..I have almost be run down at crossings crashed into in cars by women mostly on their cell phones, and texting, even with a law past so when you call out the elderly check out who is really causing crashes take a realistic look at the statistics....

i agree about both. younger kids and the elderly. i can't tell you how many times dh and i have almost wrecked because of a careless teenager or elderly person. when we were on our way to the park for the boys birthday party we were almost t boned by some bone headed teenager who was busy on his cellphone. dh FLIPPED out on the kid (if he would have hit us, he would have hit mine and eli's side of the suv). and 2 days ago dh was going to the store to pick up milk and personal products for me and he said some old man made started to turn in the middle of a red light (there was a sign posted next to the red light that said no turn on red...) and almost side swiped him.

I believe the same aplies here with 6 hrs professional instruction the problem is relatives can be the professional instruction and a lot of times relatives will sign off on time not spent with driving so that the 16 yr old can get their license quicker.

As a parent my children will have to do drivers education in a school setting not at home plus I will have to feel safe riding with them before I am releasing them into the world driving alone.

I agree about > 70 tests

In NJ a 16yr old must have 6hrs professional instruction behind the wheel and then with a licensed drive 21yrs or older with 3 yrs experience with restricted hours from 11:00PM - 5:00 AM I think and # of friends in car (only 1).  Then at age 17 it increases in hours allowed to drive (up until 12 midnight) but still only 1 friend in car.  Then at age 18 it is full license.

Yes, I do mean the road test.  Believe me I am not against the 16 year olds having to increase driving time before getting their license. I also believe whether or not they took drivers education they should still have to take the driving portion of the test.

But I would also like to see something done about others that shouldn't be driving as well.

That is a way of handling it, but it does increase costs, and so people may oppose it, but a great way of dealing with the issue in a neutral way. (I am thinking you mean the actual road test, not the written test necessarily)

A co-worker brought out a good fix. How about every other time you have to go and renew your license you should have to retake the test. Then it is not age discrimination but a way for everyone to renew their learning and verify they are still capable to drive.
