male child with abnormal itching in private area

Hi,

my son (age 6) has been itching his private area for about 8 weeks now to the point where people are making comments (teachers, friends, family).  He is constantly scratching. I have looked and see no rash or anything else - no sore, no nothing.. we took him to see 2 doctors now and they blow it off.  He is in tears over it and says it itches bad - its the area between the penis and anus.  The last doctor told me to look for worms in his anus.  I went through the entire evening freaking out about it - would flashlight his anus looking for worms every hour for 8 hours.. there was nothing there.   He is so uncomfortable. We've used cortisone, frequent showering, powder in his undies and I have gone to using glycerine soap with no SLS...

Poor kid - its killing me to see him so uncomfortable - any ideas on what could be causing this?

p.s. He says it DOES NOT hurt to urinate.

MY SON IS 13 AND IS ITHCING ON THE SIDES OF HIS PRIVATE AREA. WHERE THE PUBIC HAIR IS AT. HE'S  DEVELOPED HARDNESS THAT LOOKS LIKE SCABS FROM ALL THE SCRATCHING. MY QUESTION IS CAN A BOY HIS AGE DEVELOPE CANCER. AND CAN THAT HARDNESS BE CANCER.
HE SAYS HE IS ABLE TO PICK IT OFF BUT I AM STILL CONCERNED BECUASE I HEARD HARDNESS IN A MAN'S PRIVATE AREA COULD BE CANCER.

thanks so much for the responses. We did the tape test already and nothing.  Its not itching in the anus but the area in between which is so strange.   I guess at this point, I should take him to another doctor and see if they can help.

thank you so much!

Did the doctor give him any treatment for worms? Lots of kids pick them up at school. It may be worth buying some over the counter treatment and using it anyway just incase this is the problem, it won't do anyharn to treat for worms and may even make the situation better. It is usually recomended that the whole family is treated at the same time.
Also have you changed washing detergent or softner, or used some different kind of soap or bubble bath, has he been swimming in the pool more than usual recently? All of these things could have caused it also.

Hope you find your answer soon.
