Hormonal migraine.

I am a 23 yr old female and I have only ever had 2-3 of these migraines in my life, when I first started having periods 12 years ago and 2 days after I gave birth 3 years ago. Both times my hormones were in huge flux and I was extremely tired and had not eaten properly for a while. The doctors categorised them as hemiplegic as I had aura, blindness, aphasia, semi paralysis down one side and mild headache. My pupils dilate and I can feel it coming, sort of a mood change where I say things out loud and sort of have no innner monologue. I have had similar sensations a couple of times since but have found that if I go straight to bed then they do not develop.I am put off having another baby as I am worried it might happen again after giving birth, does anyone have any similar experience or know of anything I could do to prevent them if I gave birth again?

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
The only way to prevent migraines in the post partum period will be to take a prophylactic therapy which will be NSAIDS and Tylenol in the post partum period. Avoidance of caffeine, aged cheese, processed meats, MSG and artificial sweeteners also helps. Cold packs, dark room and sleep will also help.
