neck pain caused by their perscription

I'm still in high school and i suffer from "classical migraines" as my physician puts it. i've been back and forth with him for years since fifth grade when i first figured out i had a problem cause i couldn't help but cry myself to sleep everyday in pain. lately i've gone back to doing that so i've been put on a new perscription called topamax which has been successful so far but my struggle for a couple years now has been with the perscription they have given me for when i recieve the migraine but i can't take it. i can't take it because everytime i do it gives me such horrible chronic neck pain i cry from it worsening the headache worsening the neck pain like a domino effect till i have to sleep it off then i lose hours of the day. i was just wondering if anyone else has had the problem and has a possible solution..... i go back to my doctor next month but when i say something about it he just kinda shakes it off because hes' just a clinical doctor because i don't have the insurance or the money to see a full out migraine specialist so maybe i can go in with some idea of how to change this and better my life.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,

How old are you? For how long have you been taking the medications?

Have you been assessed thoroughly? Were any scans done, any blood tests done before a diagnosis of migraine was given?

Primary headaches due to migraine may later transform years after into chronic daily headaches due to medication overuse. If you have been taking the medications for more than ten days each month for 3 months or so and its withdrawal leads to worsening of your headaches then you may be experiencing rebound headaches.

I suggest you inform your primary physician about this.Your medicine has its side effects. Ask your physician if it is possible to stop the medications and give you something else.Importantly, do not stop or taper the dose of topamax without informing your doctor. If you know a pharmacist in the area , he/she may guide you on what questions to ask and on what to expect given your medications.

Do keep us posted regarding your physician's advice.

Classic migraine means you have aura before your headache hits.  I suffer the same.  I found the best solution for me is magnesium.  I take 250mg twice a day, morning and night.  You can find it at any drug store or walmart.  Give it two weeks.  Then, I have maxalt and midrin on hand if I have a break through headache.  I have gone down from 3 headaches a week to twice to three times a year.  My nurse practitioner that does my yearly check ups recommended it to me and magnesium rocks!  Good luck.
