Bioness update

Had my fitting with the Rep from Bioness yesterday,  It went very well.  The device is amazing.  Like anything, orthotics, afo it will take getting used to.  I can only wear it for so long each day working my way up but he did say that since I have been wearing an afo and going to pt I can probably fast track that,  It is amazing to not have an afo on!!  Not only does it trigger when I walk forward, it also triggers when you walk side to side backwards --- any time you lift your foot. They also make a thigh cuff that the rep feels may help with my knee locking out but I am waiting on that hopefully with just the device for foot drop it will help me walk more and that will in turn help my thighs get stronger.  Amazing how everything is connected isn't it!

Thanks for the update. I sure hope the VA springs for me to get one soon. And it is nice to hear that it is working so good for you. I agree that you should probably look into getting the thigh unit as well. I already have knee damage which is the reasons the VA couldn't just change my AFO type to solve my current problems.

You know you may be right -  The rep is going to come back in with the thigh cuff in a few weeks to have me try it out.  My problem is with my knee locking so it may help.  Especially with insurance being so generous.

The device is not heavy at all.  It definitely weighs less than my AFO!!!
It sits just below my knee and there is a sensor in my shoe that detects when I lift my foot.  That is the difference between bioness and the walk aide version.  He was explaining the walk aid works with the tilt of your leg so if you do not tilt your leg such as stepping to the side or back it does not fire.

The getting used to the device has more to do with the work the muscle is doing  They do not want you to overuse the muscle if you have not been using it very much so you do not have soreness.  Since I have been working my thigh and calf muscles to death to try and regain mobility I will hopefully not have as long as an adjustment period.

It is nice to have a new toy. Something positive! that really does appear to help my mobility and I can wear other shoes besides sneakers!!!!!!! WHOO HOOO

How exciting!!!  I sure wish the market for medical electronics followed the same trends as other commercial products.  If it did, we could expect the price of these things to be reasonable within a few years time.  Dream on I'm afraid.

It IS amazing how our bodies are so interconnected and depend on that for integrated, smooth function.  Unfortunately, the same principle accounts for the cascade effect of one problem following another.  I sure hope this fix helps you throw the whole process into reverse!

I wonder if you should reconsider the thigh cuff while insurance is in a paying frame of mind.  Could it speed the muscle rehab you're hoping for?  Or delay knee deterioration?  It just might be a good option to get in process now - rather than waiting for unknowns of the good OR unpleasant variety.

YEAH for you and FES (functional electronic stimulation).  I listened to a teleconference about FES recently.  Fascinating realities for now and possibilities for the future.

I am so happy for you! New toys are always fun ;) Please keep us informed during the "getting used to it" process. Is it comfortable to wear? How heavy is it?

Best,
Jane
