Gabapentin

Hi all
I have been taking Gabapentin for over 6 weeks now the first 5 weeks at 300mg 3 times a day and the last week at 600mg 3 times a day. It has done done nothing to improve my pain during the day although it does make me sleep at night, so deep that in the early hours of this morning I wet myself. The doctor is talking about adding amitriptyline at night as it make you sleepy but it spmething during the day I need it, I don't want to sleep any deeper. The other idea was to change to pergabalin. There seems to be a standard in the uk that 1800mg is the highest does for neuro pain any higher makes no difference.

I wondered if anyone had any experience or advice on this.

Thanks all,
The gabapentin does not make me feel sleepy during the day it just I seem to be in a much deeper sleep at night. Hence I don't really want to take amitriptyline at night if that is going to add to the deep sleep.

It was explained to me that the highest dose that had an effect on neurological pain was 1800mg a day a higher dose may be used for epilesy but was not effective on neurological pain.

Has anyone found pregabalin (which I believe is also known as Lyrica) to be more effective than Gabapentin?

I take both Gabapentin 3 x a day at 300mg (although neuro has suggested increasing htis as symptoms not udner control) and Amitriptyline 10mg  at night as I found 20mg at night knocked me out and I needed 10 hours of sleep a night to function. The present does suits me fine..but we are all different and I think you just have to find the right dose for you with the support of your doctor.

Cheers Sarah ;)

Hi,

The highest dose here I believe is 3600 mg of Neurontin.  I personally at my highest dose was on 1900 per day a few years ago.

Maybe it is just taking you a little longer to get acclimated to the Neurontin.  I would talk to your doctor about it.

Hi,

I've had experience with Gabapentin and amitryline.  Currently I take 900 mg Gapapentin 3X daily.  I have been taking it for years and although it made me very sleepy at first, I seem to have become acclimated to, it but it did take awhile.  When I first started the Gab. I slowly worked up to 200 mg amitryline, but that was just too much (I was comatose) as I was trying to work at the time. Have you discussed the possibility of taking detrol.
