Getting back to normal

As most of you know I have not been on here much in the last couple of months. There was entirely too much going on in my life at that time for me to try to contribute to anyone's posts.

Well I am pleased to say taht all is geeting back to normal for me. I am finally getting over the feeling of being overwhelmed and getting into a normal routine.

I focused most of my time on school. I have to say it has paid off because I am doing really well in my classes :) I will be getting the insurance pay off check for my car and planning to go car shopping as soon as I do although with gas prices at 4.15 a gallon I don't see me doing much driving anyway lol.

Personal life is doing good also, haven't had anymore devistating moments as of lately. My symptoms have demisnished to a point where I can actually function and get things done without taking 20 breaks in between. My allergies are a whole other story though. I moved down by the river (not such a smart idea with all the rain we have gotten lol) and not sure if it is because th water is high and the moisture is kicking my butt or if it is all the greenery and flowers taht I wasn't use to in the city. Either way I am hoping it calms down soon.

Today I need to get out and try to cut some grass. I know I probably shouldn't because all that walking and pushing is going to take a toll on me but my son is at his dad's for the weekend and dh is working out of town. If I don't do it then it is going to be up to my knees and we are expecting more rain tomorrow so it has to get done today. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and I can comei n and just rest for the remainer of the day.

It is so nice that life is starting to get back to normal for me. I have had so many ups and downs over the past few months that I need a break and hopefully a long break.

I don't go back to see my neuro until June. I was wondering if I should ask for a 3t MRI since he says I have MS but needs more proof to start the DMD's. The 3t will show more lesions that the 1.5t right? I just need to get on with this and if I should ask then I will if you all think it is better to just wait then I will lol. I am easy to get along with and I believe in everyone here 100% you guys have always been here for me and the ones who have been around a bit know all about my ups and downs over the past few months. I am just happy at this point to be in a good place with everything around me.

Thanks for listening and I really hope I made sense, I would read it to make sure but the lawn mower is calling my name.

Thanks all,

I got the back yard mowed yesterday took me most of the day but it is done and that is what counts. My body is sore today but I am sure that is due to lack of exercise lol. My leg hurt me for a bit last night but it is feeling ok so far today. I am going to take it easy today and only do the basics. :)

I am going to talk to my neuro about the DMD's in June when I go back and hopefully by then he will agree and start me on them.

Lu,
I am working on that second opinion, it is just slow going with my ridiculous insurance but it will come in time.

Addi,

I know what you mean, I have done that many times.

Pam,
I don't have any doctors appointments this month, my mom does but at the end of the month so I am hoping it stays this way. Gas prices are too crazy to be going back and forth lol. I hope you get some answers with your appointments and get some relief.

I started to respond about the DMD issue and it got erased.  I hate when that happens!  So I will just echo what Lulu posted.  :)

Paula,
I mowed some last night for the first time and my daughter finished it today.  More rain in the forecast, starting Sunday, so I had to seize the opportunities. This was the first cut for us, so you can guess how long it was.  When you get to do yours, just take it slow and easy.

This rain has caused all sortsof problems, especially for people with allergies.

As for the DMD, I still would like to see you get a second opinion if your insurance will do so.  MS is a clinical diagnosis and does not have to havE MRI prrof.

Paula, Hi babe, I have been missing you on here.

Glad to see that things have settled down a bit for you. Life can be sooo overwhelming, and its good you took a break to get yourself back on track.

I keep saying, I can't wait until the end of May because I have so many drs. appts. and tests, and my sons communion, mother's day, mother in laws back surgery, and on and on.....

My fam. doc. asked me what my plans for the summer are, and I said for the month of June, I am on vacation from going to see the doctors!!!!! Hopefully nothing else happens.. LOL

Welcome back, and hope you are taking it slow and easy,

Hugs, Pam

Hold that dial!

I had a similar conversation yesterday with a woman diagnosed some 22 years ago.  As the DMDs became available she declined them all because she wasn't impressed enough with their potentials to stick herself every day.  She's had few symptoms over the years and considers her disease "borderline".

She told me she hadn't had the time or taken the time to care for herself or worry about it.  She is a little worried at the moment because a fall resulted in a broken bone.  She has some foot drop but doesn’t concede MS may have contributed in any way to her instantaneous face to floor encounter.  She thinks maybe she needs a bone density test.

She is Lucky 2.  Ess talked to Lucky 1.  I am Lucky 3 because I've done pretty well over the 20 years between original MRI and final diagnosis.  I didn't initially think I'd sign up for a DMD but I'm not great at beating odds.  It took about a week to decide I would take every advantage available.

I find it interesting the same doc who failed to prescribe a DMD for dog-walking-lady drops his chin in amazement when asking how she does so well.  Heads up doc.  It was no thanks to you.  And, by the way, what happens to the hero image when things don't go so well?

Wonder how many times a DMD goes un-prescribed or unused because somebody doesn’t think it has good enough potential?  Wonder how many of those same people would think nothing of laying down hard earned dollars for a much higher risk lottery ticket?

Paula, I hope you get a chance to buy a ticket for your future.

I have touched the tocpic of why not start the DMD's and he said that it is due to my insurance. Without solid proof they won't pay. The last time I saw him he talked to me about the DMD's and he asked what my sister is taking and how she is doing on it and took some notes...so maybe the next appointment he will re do the mri's and maybe the LP and see what they show.

I got in contact with a friend from highschool, haven't talked to her in years and as we were talking she said that she is in the early stages of MS but her neuro won't put her on the DMD's yet either. Hmmm maybe she is seeing the same one as me lol I will have to ask her when I see her again.

That (waiting on the DMDs) seems to happen all the time, why I don't know.

Just today I was talking with a neighbor/fellow dog-walker who has had MS for 14 years. She thinks her neuro is god, and who am I to disabuse her of that notion, but anyway--she has never been on one of the drugs, because that's what he recommended.

She is also extremely lucky. Other than fatigue, she has had no symptoms and no changes on MRI in all that time. The doctors keep asking her how she does it. The thing is, we have seen so many members here who were symptomless for many years and then whammo. MS is lurking and doing its thing all the same.

So I agree, why wait? For what? Not anything good, that's for sure. People in that position should really ask their neuros that exact question.

Sorry if I sort of hijacked the thread. Paula, we really want to know if you did that mowing.

Now back to our regular programming. :-}

The studies say 3T imaging has 30-60% improvement over 1.5T imaging and radiologists detect about 20% more lesion activity.  So if they see 5 lesions on a 1.5T they may see 6 on a 3.0T.  Some people show more, and some people show less.  Software and technique matter more than Tesla.

There are also problems comparing 3.0T studies to 1.5T studies.  The higher power means that they typically can not do T2W (T2 Spin Echo sequences) because the SAR (energy exposure) would be too high, so they do T2* (T2 Gradient Echo sequences.)

You can ask your doctor, but 3.0T make more sense for spine imaging (as do Diffusion Weighted sequences,) but may not for brain imaging.  It pretty much means serial MRIs start over since there are problems comparing to previous studies.  Many neurologists will not change imaging techniques if they are doing serial monitoring.

It is great to see you settled into your new place and feeling up to participating with us again.  :)

I remember the last time I tried to mow the grass.  I hope your experience is much better than mine was.  Please, please listen to your body.  If you can't finish it then you can't finish it.

I am really glad that school is going so well for you!  That is great news!  And good luck with the car shopping.

I don't understand how anyone can have a dx of MS and then wait on the DMD's??  That doesn't make any sense to me.  That's like saying you have cancer but we won't treat it until we see more damage....grrr!  Yeah, I would see about the 3T.

Well, glad to see you back, sista!

Hugs,
Addi

Ess,

not sure if there is a 3t MRI near me but I am willing to travel a little if need be. I just want to get on the meds so that I can help slow the progression. As for the grass it is on hold for a few...I have to borrow my sisters mower and her husband is working on it right now. My son usually does it but he was home last weeked and it rained all weekend. I don't think it can go much longer.

Kelly,

Yeah I have been trying to post. There are so many new people here, its amazing and horrible at the same time. Amazing they found us and horrible for what brings them here. I live in a town of 100 now lol so there aren't many kids I can get to do it and the exercise may be what I need, it will just take me longer than it takes everyone else because I will go slower and take more breaks.

Welcome back!! I had noticed on the board that you were posting a little bit more! =)

I'm glad things are getting back to normal for you and that the family drama is a little less.

Take it easy mowing the yard, is there a neighbor boy you could pay to do it?  If you end up doing it yourself, just take several breaks.

Glad to have you back, I've been thinking about you.

Congrats on the classes going well for you, that's awesome.

Have a great day!

Nice to see you back, Paula.

I would definitely talk to the doc about a 3T. I'd say I understand that the more powerful MRIs show more, especially in the spine. Is there a 3T available near you?

It's good to hear that life is on a more even keel for you! Don't work too hard on that grass. If it's too much, just let it be. Not worth one of our MS exhaustion-type flares.
