Gralize AND Tegretol ER for TN and Neck pain

Hi..I'm complicated!!  My neuro recently prescribed Tegretol for me  for TN and my pain mgmt doc prescribed Gralize. My pain mgmt doc said to just try the Gralize first because the Tegretol has major side effects. I have since talked to my neuro's nurse who told me to go ahead with the Tegretol. I did, three days ago and I am so drunk I am useless. All I want to do is sleep and lie around. This is NOT anywhere near normal for me.  Have any of you had similar experiences with this drug, and if so, how in the world did you handle it? Thanks so much!!!

Gabapentin certainly has to be tapered up, maybe over a couple of weeks, to get the right dosage. Starting at a high dose will definitely make anyone feel woozy, to say the least. Max dose of Gabapentin is 3600 mg/day, but no one should start at that level. Also, coming off Gab requires tapering as well. The risk of seizures otherwise is vey real.

I've never taken Tegretol, so don't know a lot about it. However, it too works on nerve pain, so very possibly this in combo with Gab is just too much. If your doctors refuse to collaborate on this, talk to a knowledgeable pharmacist. In my experience, they are more than willing to research anything they might not be sure about, and especially drug interactions.

Tegretol is rough the first two weeks or so. Then it gets better. As long as the monitor your blood it should be okay. It has been on the market along time.

I would not take them together because Gralize in Gabenpentin which is in the same class as Tegretol.. Everyone is different. I had a bad reaction to Gabenpentin but did well on Tegretol. You might be different. Pain clinics are big on Gabenpentin. That is the first drug my pain clinic put me on. It is a good drug.

Tegretol and Gabenpentin both have a risk of side effects and both are rough at first. Luckily my Neurologist sent me to a pain clinic so I am not between two doctors having differing opinions on what I should take.
