May I Share in my Joy....

This is totally off subject, but such a land-mark in my life that I want to scream it to the mountain-tops, with my best freinds; the members of my cyber family on the MS Forum...

Fourteen years ago on my 40th birthday I sat in a doctor's office, when he broke the news to me that I was now a Type 2 Diabetic that would have to be treated aggressively.  I had very high and dangerous blood sugar readings.  I first started on oral medication and a strict diet.  Throughout the years, my diabetes could not be controlled and I was placed on pills AND daily insulin shots.  Lots of insulin. It was a fight to keep my diabetes under control.

Two and a half years ago, I lost 125 pounds and started to see my blood sugar readings coming down.  I was able to stop insulin.  A true victory for me.  I remained on diabetes pills twice a day until last week.  My blood sugar was low.  The doctor's cut my medication in half.  Another victory.  Today, the doctor's cut ALL my diabetes medicine.

First the first time in 14 years I am now FREE of any and all diabetes medicine.  Does that mean that I am cured?  No, I will always have to be careful and watch my sugar closely.  But no more pills....WHOPEEEE!

BUT...I DO FEEL FREE...for the first time in 14 years.  Thank you for letting me share this news with you.  Wonder if I can get away with going to Dairy Queen tonight for a milkshake with bits of Oreo cookie in them?  Naw...I better leave that stuff alone.

Have a GREAT DAY everyone...I know I will....

Heather

Congratulations!!  I know it was hard work but it paid off.  My grandmother was a brittle diabetic. Now my mom has diabetes.

It also runs heavy in my husbands family.  What kind of diet do you follow?

Bascially I am on the diet where if it tastes good, I know it's bad for me.....just kidding.  I just follow a sensible "diet" (really a lifestyle change, I don't diet) and watch my intake of carbs.  Carbs are not good for diabetics and certainly not good for someone that wants to watch their weight.  I have also forever given up anything that is fried and eat little to no bread products.

Thanks for all of your good thoughts at my news.  Today is a GOOD day in Heather's life.  Time for some good news, when the world is filled with so much bad news, these days.

Hi, Heather.

Congratulations!!!!! I am so happy for you, and I am so proud of you!!!!

Diabetes is terrible, my Dad had it and died of colon cancer that metastasized to his brain.

So, I'm esp. relieved that you made the sincere effort to not only get yours under control, but eliminate it!!!!

  Hugs,
  Sheila
