Medical History

Hi there!

As one of my special concern is about the theory that MS might be have a genetic component and I have a daughter, I was wondering how many of you have a relative with this dx? I do not have noone in my family with a CNS disorder ...

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Jude

Thank you all for your answers. I do know the MS researches theory, but I was curious about ''statistics'', let's say, in this community.

Have a nice day :-)

Hi Jude -

Thank you for posting this as I am concerned too since my diagnosis period came during pregnancy. For this reason, we have decided to only have 1 child.

My only other autoimmune connection that I know of is my 1st cousin on my mom's side. I do not know my birth father's family history.

One of my friend's from the board has said that her Neuro recommending her daughter begins Vitamin D at 9 years old. I'm going to inquire from both my Neuro and Pediatrician as well.

Good Luck and Best WIshes!

MS researchers have strong evidence of a genetic component to the development of MS, though is not a directly inherited disease. Further, it is not one single gene involved in MS but > 50, and the chances of inheriting all of these genetic variants is quite low.

There is no known history of MS or any neurological disease in my family, and very few autoimmune disease of which I'm aware.

Hi, the only MS in my family was a second cousin on my mother's side. I know that she worries constantly because her cousin was dx'd around the same age as me after 40 and she spent years in a home with a feeding tube before passing away around 50.

Strangely that does not worry me because I know that it is so different for everyone. Life hands us what it wants and we learn to deal with whatever it has in store.

There is a genetic connection but it is not as strong as with many diseases. There are identical twins where one has MS and the other does not. If your daughter ever displays Neurological symptoms you should check it out, but I would not worry about it.

I am the only one in my family who has MS.

Hi, Jude.  It's known there is a greater predisposition to having MS if you have close relatives with the disease, but its not a given that if someone else has it you will too or vice versa.

For me, the closest connection is my mother's sister lived with MS for over 50 years.  I also continue to suspect my mom has it, but don't push it with her because it is a sensitive topic. She just turned 90 and has always had the classic MS symptoms.  She does have psioratic arthritis, which is another autoimmune disorder.
