I think your all right and yes they do work different over here we dont seem to get much access into the appointments who sees us and cant seem to get contact with them inbetween appointments but this time they are based here in a hospital before i saw a neuro 2 yrs ago (who checked for bulging disk and compression as well as ruling out MS) but not using the MS protocol so dnt know how he did that!! and he flittered between two hospitals and covered a huge area his the only neuro for 3 counties so had the most huge list and i only ever got 10 mins appointment and felt if he had more time he would of kept me on his books to find out more but once you dnt fit in that black and white critia then its off you go!!
still its been 2 yrs of sz now and i've tried all they said, intense physio, hydro, tablets everything and a yr later i am registered disabled never have more then a few days inbetween of good days they have to be missing something!! it cant allbe fibro as they say.
not got appointment yet just know its sat in the neurosurgeon depatrment.
chasing them again this week.

Lu is right in that the neurosciences are interchangeable and the doctor's receive educated on the same basic foundations of diagnosing neurological disorders.
I think it is fortunate for you that you are seeing a neurosurg first. He/she generally do a very thorough exam and if they don't think your symptoms are related to a mechanical problem with your spine, for example, then they will refer you to a neurologist. If this doctor is suspecting MS after listening to your symptoms, then the added bonus is that he/she will make sure you see and neurologist who specializes in MS. Try to think of this referral as a good thing. I hope it will work out for you.

My guess is they may be wanting to rule out that your symptoms are not related to spinal compression or some such. This would fall under a neurosurgeon. If they rule that out they will probably as Lu said send you on to someone else within the group.
Just a guess, but I hope you find some answers

Sam,
Your health system operates so much different that ours does here in the States. But I would venture a guess if they are all located at the same facility, their services are perhaps interchangeable. You may begin with just about anyone in the group and get passed on if they are not the right doctor for your symptoms. That's just my guess....
Pick up the phone and call them and ask them why. When is your appointment date?
as always,
Lu
