Finding the right neuro...

I went to a new neurologist yesterday.  I felt as though the first one I saw just wouldn't listen to me among other issues.  I had a problem with a medication he prescribed me and after calling three days in a row, his receptionist finally called me back. I ended up at my GP and she was shocked that he let it go.

The new one was definitely more thorough, but she seemed very abrupt.  She asked me if I'd been told I have optic neuritis and I told her no.  We discussed her findings and things I need to watch for.  Then she asked how we'd made the decision of which DMD to use.  I explained and was told that she would have preferred I'd used a different one and why and if an MRI showed any negative differences in 6 months we would switch.  Although I definitely felt I was being cared for at a much better medical level, she is NOT a people person.  My 15 year old daughter was with me and when we left she said "MOM!  SHE WAS SCARY!"

I guess my question is how many visits do you give them before you look for someone new?  I'm going to go for a few more visits because I don't know for sure if she was unhappy with decisions that had been made previously or if our personalities ustj don't work well together. I'm not looking for a best friend and she really did seem to listen, but I just didn't get "warm fuzzies" from her.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.  Thanks!!

Thank you for seconding my thoughts!  Kelly, I wonder if we're seeing the same neuro? LOL!  I really felt like she was listening, but then I received a follow up letter from her and I wonder....Definitely going to give her another couple of visits.  I'm keeping a written log so I remember to talk to her about the things I need too.  That way I won't feel intimidated and forget what I wanted to say! :)

Hope you all have a great day!!
Chris

Some of the best dr's I work with have little to no personalities but when you are in trouble and need the best they are it.  Every Neuro I have come in contact with are all a little strange but they have to be so very smart to do what they do.  They are really considered "elite" in the hospital world.  Give it a few more times and then go with your gut.  Our Ped Neuro is an "odd duck" but his oddities work for our son but I feel we don't get very far and he tries really hard.  I used to be very uncomfortable around him but have grown to really like him.  The MS Specialist has little to no personality with our son but seems to know her stuff.  I am still on the fence and will give it our 3rd visit to make a full decision.  I'm going to go with my gut too!  Goodluck!

Hi, Chris. I would give her at least another visit or two. She listened to you, and that's important.

Maybe her husband left her last week. Maybe her house burned down.  Worth giving her another chance, at least, to be sure. Sounds like you feel comfortable with the medical treatment aspect, so there isn't a huge risk in waiting to see if you two settle into a more comfortable relationship over time.

Of course, you should heed your inner voice if it's telling you that something is very wrong.

Good luck to you.

I have to say, "Welcome to Colorado."  So far as I can see, the neuros here aren't the best. I've heard so many people here say the same thing that live here.  I'm not for sure what's up with that.  It's like you have to take what you can get.

You definitely should feel comfortable with the neuro that you have. It's easy for me to say this - I'm still not comfortable with the one I switched over to uly of last year.  She's the 3rd one since 2009.  She has HORRIBLE bed-side manner. And she never listens and disregards just about everything that I say.

I'll just say don't waste too much time with the wrong neuro. However, one appt with a neuro might not be enough to know for sure.  I guess it depends.

Best of luck to you,
Kelly
