HAD MY ENT APPT TODAY FOR VERTIGO

Hello everyone!

Okay!  Had my ENT appt today, hence the reason for all the ?'s in my last post about vertigo.  I like to go to these dr's with a little knowledge myself.  After the hearing test, the next test, they had me sit up on a table with a screen in front of me, and they had these yellow and blue stripes fly past, and wanted my to follow one to the end of screen, and then go back to center, and repeat over and over.  I couldn't even watch it, never mind follow the stripes, it was so uncomfortable.

Anyway, they did all these balance and hearing tests.  During the last part of the test, the part I was dreading, because the paperwork they sent me described it to me.  It talked about the blowing of warm and cool air into my ears, and that it could make me dizzy and nauseous,(is that how it's spelled?) I hope.  Used to be an English major, now with all my brain issues, it's down the tube.  During that part of the test, it really didn't make me dizzy, just the very first ear with the cool air, for a mini-micro second, and then it went away.  He did this 4 times 2x in each ear, 1xcool, 1xwarm, in each.  I didn't get nauseus or dizzy at all.  During these tests he had me name things, like animals, veggies, fruit, boys, girls names etc.  During the last time on my left ear, when he was blowing warm air, afterwards he said he needed to repeat it, cause he saw something.

He repeated that side, and then made me lay there with the goggles still on that are blackened, and then went to get an audiologist to look at the results.  She came in and asked me some ?'s about my dizziness, and then told me to wait to speak with the Dr.   He said that there is a little bit of a difference between the right and left ears.  He said he wanted me to go for vestibular positional therepy for some of the balance and dizzy issues.  He then said that the other balance issues I have are more central nervous system.  I asked him where the lesion would be, and he said that somewhere between the brain and the ear or ears, dont remember, there is damage and wrong signals are being sent, and that this is a neuro problem that only your neuro should dx.  Now,  I don't remember word for word what he said, but that was the gist of it.  I said to him ..."So there is a definite central problem? ..... and he said ..."Yes".   I then  said, .."They are evaluating me for ms, do you think it's ms?...He said ....It very well could be, there seems to be alot going on neurologically, but I'm gonna send my report to him so he can make an assesement....

I then asked him, is this reversable?  He said no...I said, well if I am dx with ms, can the progression be slowed down with the drugs, like my sister is taking? .....He said....Yes, that should work.  So he said I was having some kind of positional balance problem, and I guess vertigo, stemming from a central problem.  Everytime, I get tests done, or go to a Dr, they find some other reason for me to see another Dr. or go for another test.

So, what do ya think?  I have I think one more Dr next week, my urologist, for my bladder issues.

As always guys, thanks for listening.  HELP!  It's getting to be a little overwhelming.  I'm glad at least the Lupus is in remission.

Hugs, and more Hugs!!  Sandie

Hey Sandie
This is quite familiar to me. My first "real" symptom of my MS was the balance problem. They sent me to the ENT and he had me do a bunch of exercises thinking the stones in my ear were out of whack and needed to be moved back into place. That, of couse didn't work. I went to an audiologist and every test came out fine.

I basically did these tests to rule the ear thing out. After being dx, my neurologist explained that the location of my lesions are why I can't walk straight. Its very upsetting that I can't work now due to the dizziness/balance problem.

I take an injection ev night of Copaxone. Hopefully, it will help with the relapses and occurance of more lesions.

Good luck on getting a dx. Take Care!

Hi Kristi

Thanks for responding, and giving me some insight.  Do ya think that I am looking at an MS dx then?  Also, where did your neuro say is the location of these lesions that causes the balance problem?  My ENT was a little vaque. I now need to use a cane, have you found that also?

Very interesting.. I have been dealing with vertigo and balance problems for eight months now and I have seen my ENT numerous times and not once did I have any of these tests.  What in the world is going on??  Would you mind describing your vertigo symptoms?  Is it positional? I have even been to boston to Mass eye and ear and never had these tests yet the dr told me it's MAV and to eat a special diet??  Let me tell  you that doesn't do one thing for the dizziness.

Hey Banjom
My sx are, when I walk, I actually tilt to the left and sometimes I feel like something is pushing me forward.  It feels like the floor is crooked.  I also get the feeling that the room is spinning or moving, or the floor is rushing up towards me, which makes me feel like I need to grab on to something.  I feel very unsteady, and wobbly, I need to use my cane to walk, as this makes me bump into things, and trip. When I take my shower I need to hold onto something. When I close my eyes, I  will start to fall over. It's strange, cause it started out of the blue, woke up one morning, couldn't walk straight, but it was during my bout with ON, so I think I was having my first flare.

The other sx I have for the positional balance problems are standing, or certain movement to the right or left, will make me dizzy.  Once in a while it makes me feel nauseous, but not often.  I noticed when I do any kind of house work where I am bending over to pick things up, I will get dizzy.  This is positional vertigo.  My Dr. said the other kind, which affects the central nervous system, is what causes the body tilting and vearing to a certain side or direction.  I feel like I'm drunk when I walk.  I could start out the day okay, but if I start to do any walking in the store for instance, after about 5 mins it will start, so when I go to these stores, I usally use their scooters, so I don't have to fight it and I can enjoy my shopping.
They called them balance tests.
Hope this helped, let me know if you have any more questions.  Take care.

Wow! After reading your last post, its just like hearing my own recount of the symptoms. I, too pull to the left, feel like I'm drunk, if I even turn a corner in a clinic, or go thru the twisty line at the bank, i am close to falling.

I haven't tried a cane because I didn't think it would help me. I always hold a cart when at the store and the mall is just super hard so I don't go very often unless my daughter is with me to hang on to.

When I walk, I feel like I am falling forward. It's alot like when a toddler first learns how to walk, the "out of controlness".

I also woke up one day and just couldn't walk straight. This never goes away. I try to accept that this is how its gonna be, but its hard. I can't work, now I rethink the whole trip thing. Whether or not I can walk on a beach or go to Vegas.

Its very depressing. Do you still work?  Not that "misery loves company" but its so nice to find someone else going thru this very same thing. So many times I feel completely alone. I am going to try a cane. Thanks!

Take care

Hey Kristi,
Yeah, it is very comforting, in the way only those on this forum understand.  Thanks for your response.  Yeah, its so strange how it started.  Woke up, and there is was, and hasn't completely left since.  Dont get me wrong, I do get some better days. but everyday, there is always some kind of dizziness.
I just moved into a new home 2 months ago, and trying to do the unpacking is really s struggle.  The bending over, and sitting up, because I need to do it sitting down, and my hubby places the boxes in front of me, its still so hard.  After all the bending over, and looking this way and that, I only last a half hour give or take, then the dizzy  feeling wont leave the rest of the day.
The feeling that you are toppling over, falling forward, or to a certain side, is the vertigo that is from the brain.  The other dizzy feeling is from the ear or ears.  I think thats what the Dr said, I was so distracted, I didn't hear the whole explanation, after he said central nervous system damage and involement my mind came to a halt.
Have you gone to an ENT yet?  If not, you should if you are having these balance problems, and get your dx of whats happening, so at least thats one thing you can put aside, and move on to the next sx.  Unless your already dx.

Thanks Kristi,   Hugs!

Hi Sandie,
I actually saw an ENT about a yr ago, before I saw the Audiologist. I was dx on June 29th of last year. I have been in Physical Therapy and my therapist does exercises with me. I walk one foot in front of the other, I throw a ball against the wall, let it bounce in front of me, and catch it. That is hard because I get soo dizzy just looking up and down.

I find that my dizziness gets worse if I am stressed or in a crowded place.  When I am in bed and I go to roll over, I get very dizzy. I have become accustomed to it, bouncing off the doorjam. (I'm just a human pinball)

I hope you get a diagnosis soon!

Hi Starryeyes,
So when you went to your ent what kind of dx did they give you?  I find that my dizziness gets worse under stress and the rolling over in bed is absolute torture.  i too have become accustom to this.  It's all the other symptoms that have come along that are really baffling me.
