do i have ms or tourettes? Looking for opinions

I was recently told i may have tourettes due to vocal and motor tics. The tics include spasming of multiple areas of my body and occasionally making an indecipherable sound. I had these on occasion when I was a kid, but they have worsened over the past year. I also have body pain and lack of coordination that has been getting worse. I also was seen in the er for blurred vision not long ago and this is still a problem even with glasses. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi and welcome,

Whilst vocal and oral muscular problems can happen to pwMS, Tourettes is generally a different type of neurological condition and what you are experiencing now is less likely to be related to a neurological condition like MS because as you mention, you actually did first started experiencing this issue in your childhood, which is  commonly when Tourettes first presents.....

"Genetic studies also suggest that some forms of ADHD and OCD are genetically related to TS, but there is less evidence for a genetic relationship between TS and other neurobehavioral problems that commonly co-occur with TS....The gender of the person also plays an important role in TS gene expression. At-risk males are more likely to have tics and at-risk females are more likely to have obsessive-compulsive symptoms."

You mention in another post your preexisting conditions "PMHx: Hypertension, Diabetes, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Arthritis, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Asthma (no problems with it in YEARS)." and i would highly recommend you consider the potential of your tics being mistaken for Tourettes and the potential of these tics being in someway related to your complex preexisting medical conditions and or medications, and it might be in your best interest to see a Tourettes specialist and be officially diagnosed, which will likely include re evaluation of your medical diagnostic history too.

I hope that helps....JJ
