Things can just fall into your lap when you are not looking sometimes...

So strange how things can work out sometimes.

I stopped working almost a year ago, not "wanting" to, but feeling as if I "had" to. I had over an hour commute each way, and was physically tired when I got there.  My Neuro had been telling me, that I really needed to stop working for my health.   Things were really taking a toll on me last year, and I officially stopped working in March.  My job is with ophthalmologist, pediatric and Neuro.  I am the person that sees all the kiddos with eye muscle problems and vision issues.  I am also the person that "fixes" double vision in the office. (when I workes full time, I assisted in eye muscle surgery.) I also started to have double vision myself for the 1st time in my life, and was having trouble examining patients with one eye closed!!  I couldn't tell the pts. I too was having double vision, can u imagine!

Anyway, I needed new glasses.  I went to a group of ophthalmologists last week.  A rather upscale practice, which is 2.2 miles from my house.

When I was picking out my glasses, I happened to mention to the optician that I was going to be in sticker shock when she tells me the price.  I have not had to pay for glasses or an eye exam in 23 years!  She said she was embarrassed to tell me the price, when she did.

I jokingly said, "ya know what, give me a job here and I will work it off! Like working in the kitchen after a meal!"

We got to talking and laughing.  I am rather funny at times and so was she. (funny looking;))

I got a call last night from the doc who owns this practice.  She also own another about 1/2 hour away.  She told me th doc who saw me, had written down my name, (I was talking to her about my exam and such) . She also said. My name was given to her through the optician as well.

She asked if I might be interested in working for her either part time or full time.  I told her I stopped working due to the drive and starting to have double vision myself.  The whole ms thing is already out there, from the eye exam also.

We talked on the phone for some time.  She said I should let her know I'd I am interested and what I would like to do.  She told me I can work 4 hours a week or 30 hours a week, whatever I want. I could name days and hours and let her know what my pay should be, and we would discuss.

I am dropping my resume this morning.  How fortunate am I?!  2 miles from my house, wasn't even looking for a job, and they know my health issues already.

Crazy how life happens sometimes.

Thx for listening.  Had to share this with my forum family!

Michelle

Thank you all, I feel very fortunate.

I also have to agree Dennis, GG and summer,

I, too, am a type A personality.  I have always worked very hard with very little breaks.  Was always ok for me, until I got sick.  I don't know I can take it easier at a new job.

I am going to discuss at my interview my limitations.  Don't like that AT ALL!

I tend to push myself too hard, and do tend to get in trouble with this.  I am still trying to accept this whole MS thing at times, and get very very frustrated.

So, yes, I hear you all, and made me think about my personality and HOW to take care of ME, as well as others.

Thanks,

Michelle

Part time is a good option.  I went back to work part time after being on disability to see if I could handle it and it was good :)  You know what they say Networking is how you find new opportunity.

Unrelated but a friend has mental illness has not been able to handle working for a year due to major depression /anxiety, but she is coming out of it and remember last year someone told her who to contact to be a crossing guard.  She saw on the news they were short crossing guards in herarea, so she called her conectin  and got an inerview a few das later

That is good news! But I should warn you due to my experience.

About 1 year after I went on disability I was feeling better and thought I could handle going back to work. I found a contract position as a Hardware design engineer so I could basically set my own hours as long as I got the work done by the due date.

I told myself that I would work each day until I got tired but being an A type person I just could not stop working when I needed to stop. Needless to say I was getting worse every day and just barely got the project done. I did still manage to get the design done ahead of schedule and they wanted me to do some other projects. But there was no way I could have worked one more day.

It ended up taking me almost 4 years to get back to the same place I was before I started that job.

So if you do decide to go back to work set yourself limits that will not task yourself too much and STICK with them.
