Are 50+ lesions alot?

My mri came back with 50+ small lesions, I am 52, does that sound like an unusually high number? One md says it looks like old ms lesions another says non-specific inflamation lesions, I have rheumatoid arthritis and a history of migraines. Everything I have read seems to talk about 3-5 to maybe 12 lesions. Does the number of lesions mean anything?  Thanks for any input I am a little worried.

I am 32.  I asked my neurologist for the amount of lesions I have and she said over 50,  I feel better now than I have in a long time.  I also have a black hole...

Hi RD and welcome to the MS forum.  Have you been dx'd with MS or are you still looking for a cause for those lesions?

Many things can cause brain lesions, including migraines.  And the lesion shapes and locations will give your doctor clues as to whether all of these are MS or something else.

I definitely have more than 12 lesions, but no where near 50.  That would seem like an inordinately large number but I may be wrong about that.  I don't want my neurologist to be a lesion counter and be fixated on how many I have.  I'm more concerned about  keeping more from forming and keeping them out of important parts of my brain.

Welcome again and i hope we will see you around the forum.

My best,
Lulu

My new neuro from an academic center told me that the number of lesions does not make any difference. He did say that none of them should be there but since I too have migraines he said he would not rule in or out ANY lesions as being an MS plaque unless he could see it under a microscope. Anyway, he also said it's the clinical symptoms that matter not how many lesions you have.

BTW, I'm new here but I don't recall seeing you post before so if you're a newcomer, welcome!
