And by the way I think the idea of a social worker is an excellent one for you.  If you can get the help of a social worker at the hospital you deal with for MS or clinic.  Some local non-profit organizations where you live like Catholic charities, for example have social workers available for people at a very low payment based on ability to pay, maybe could help and also offer you some emotional support as well. Imnot sure the people at social services office would offer this, but may be able to make a suggestion

good luck

hi,
Im going to give this a shot. I live in NY, dont receive social services but know something about having helped others etc.

Receiving social services benefits is very difficult for everyone, especially if you have a spouse who is drawing an income.  I know it may not seem like alot of money to you but it doesnt have to be much for them to refuse you.  Benefits that are available MAY be monthy public assistance, food stamps etc. medicaid  You are right you will have difficulty because your wife works and has some income.  They have to take into account her salary, any assets you may have  and you have to fall below what there monetary income level is in order to receive these benefits.  There is no way to speed it up unfortunately.  You have to fill out the paper work and you have to meet with them and follow the protocol in order to be considered for benefits.  There are certain stiuations such as, when there is no food in the house, eviction is pending, no heat etc. that benefits can be put in place immediately in some circumstances such as these, but again depending on your wife's salary.

Social security disabiity and social security supplemental insurance SSD and SSI respectively are a bit different.  SSI kind of works like public asistance in that you really cant have any income, or assets and you are disabled or pending disablity I believe.

SSD, though it may take quite awhile to get, they ususally turn everyone down the first time.  Your wife's earnings dont have any bearing on whether or not you qualify for this.  You need enough work credits, which is sounds like you have, and you have to be disabled for 1 year or to be anticipated by your md to be disabled for 1 year atleast.  But this is a long process and that is why you need an attorney for this.

Sorry about he social services problems you are going thru, but you are not alone, your complaints echo the many, many people who receive or are trying to receive these benefits, they dont make it easy for a reason.

The best thing you can do is do everything they ask you to do, ie. paperwork, attending appts. etc.  If you are deemed eligible after all this you will receive benefits.

good luck

Lenny, you just need to let your doctor and your lawyer earn their pay. If you don't know how best to fill out a form, ask one of these people. It takes a while for disability to be approved, maybe 6 months. But it's not just you, it's everyone who is approved.

For social services, the same info can be submitted. Have a social worker help you, if need be. There are people for that too.
