Hi there. The prognosis for traumatic brain injury depends on various indicators like duration of coma, severity of coma in the first few hours post injury assessed by Glasgow Coma Score, duration of amnesia after the trauma, location and the size of hemorrhages and contusions in brain, if polytrauma sustained. It is very difficult to predict the neurological outcome, only certain generalizations are possible. More severe injury will have longer recovery period and more impairment for the survivor. Recovery from diffuse axonal injury takes longer than recovery from focal contusions. Recovery is unpredictable if there is hypoxic injury. Cognitive and behavioral processes are affected if the specific areas controlling these are injured. There are various mechanisms of recovery post brain injury. Initially the reduction of edema of brain tissue causes some improvement. You must consult the treating intensivist for the best judgment about your son in law’s condition. Take care.
