Of course jiu jitsu causes brain damage and so does wrestling, whenever you get thrown or acidently hit in the head during grappling your brain gets rattled. Hence the true stereotype that all jocks are STUPID> the best self defense is weight lifting and a sharp ring on your middle finger. Get the Jiu jitsu guy in a headlock and hit his skull with your sharp ring, do this to stop him from trying to submit you. In high school i fought brazilian guy rico, used my ring on his head and won
Martial arts is a great sport. It builds self-confidence, it's a good workout, you learn to work with others, and if you get in a realtime jam you will find a way out. I practiced jujitsu, loved every minute of it, and I'm a female. See, it's studied in a controlled environment, even contests with other dojos are controlled. Like the other poster said, if you've had too much, you can tap the canvas with your hand, and that's a signal to let up. But if you are indeed a little worried about passing out from getting in a headlock, try out for track and field sports (running), or baseball, basketball, soccer, all relatively safe sports.
Not sure on BJJ. But I did Muay Thai kickboxing for a few years. Unfortunately, my vertigo became to much so I quit going. Good luck in your choices.
Hey man, the most beautiful thing about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the tap. When you get in trouble, you just tap out. There is NO evidence of long time Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners having any brain damage or any neurological problems (The founder lived no nearly a hundred and his brother just died at 97!).
The type of blood flow restriction that could cause brain damage is prolonged and generally you're only exposed to it if you hold on in a choke until you've passed out. In jiu jitsu, we tap and that's how we learn.
