uncontrollable body jerks at night

I have the strangest thing happening to me. I'm very scared over it actually, so anyone who can offer advice would be so comforting to me.
Sometimes when I sleep at night, I'm awoken by my body "jerking". I am awake while this happens, and I can't stop it from happening. Even if I say to myself, ignore it, it will stop, or try really hard just to stay still, I can't. It can be my whole body that jerks, or just my back, or my legs. It's like it happens regardless of anything I do. I have even gotten out of bed and gone to sit on the couch with the tv on, and the episode continued ... every few seconds my body would just give a lurch. The scariest part for me is the fact that I can't hold my body still. It's outside of my control, whatever it is. The only thing I have been able to read about that kind of sounds like it is restless leg syndrome, but it's more than my leg, and I'm awake. It's like my body compulsively twitches. Please, please can someone relate to me? I am so scared by this.

See a Neurologist. The episodes aren't every night, right?  I would keep a log about how often you are having them and how long they last.  Sounds like Myoclonic seizures or jerks.  Do you notice any specific activity you do before bed that could correlate with having them?  Stressed out?
