Okay, so since you are aware you are doing it and you say it is a crazy need then I assume that if you don't do it you have some sort of anxiety going on. So next time you notice yourself doing it, stop yourself and if you have an increase in anxiety then try this breathing tecnique. Take a deep breath in through your nose and hold it for five seconds and count this out in your head. Then let it all out through your mouth. This is a CBT trick that you can do anywhere at any time and nobody will know you are doing it. This will bring your heart rate back down to normal and should help make the anxiety go away.
These things obviously become habits and the good news is that habits can be broken. So you may want to think about professional help in the form of a psychologist. You need to get to the bottom of why you are doing it so that a treatment plan can be put in place to help you with whatever is underlying this behavior.
I do more in times of stress, but it is a old habit I have. For the last 5 years I try to stop by cutting my hair really short, but that only works for a while...
I am aware I am doing it... It is like a crazy need...
Do you notice if you do it in times of stress? Or do you think this is a habit that you have developed over time? Also are you aware you are doing it right away or after a while?
