Extreme pain in both knees

Good evening,

I am in so much pain and can't get any answers. For five weeks I have had severe pain in both my knees, the left is the most painful. I am having a hard time getting a doctor to find out what the issue is. 5 weeks ago I got the flu, never had it before and it really made me sick. At the same time or just before I started to get sore knees which got worse and worse to the point the pain makes me want to throw up. The pain is all over the knees and it feels like I have fluid in there and it feels like the muscles and tendons are being ripped off. I can't go up or down stairs without going sideways and even then I want to cry with the pain. I am 43 and female. I went to a doctor who did nothing and did not take it seriously. After two more weeks of pain I saw a different doctor. He said it would go away on its own. I waited and had to go back as I could not stand the pain. The same doctor said he could not do anything. I got upset and demanded some tests. I had blood tests and xrays. I also went for a bone scan. I am waiting on the results still. I went to a new doctor tonight as I am beside myself with pain. She brushed me off and said it would only be urgent if one knee was giving me problems but becaues it was both I would be ok with time. At one point they said it was viral arthritis but I am just wanting some help. The blood tests said I do not have arthritis. I am allergic to anti histamines and wonder if the fluid is a reaction to something. Can anyone think of what might cause this issue at both knees at the same time. My ankles are also hurting me. Both knees are also makng popping sounds when I try and go up or down stairs. The pain is just sickening.
Thanks for any suggestions given.

hi friend, i saw your results.
you need to do the sr uric acid levels. ERS maximum is 20. So your  value is 28 which shows some inflammatory process is going inside your body.
i am waiting for the results.

Good evening/morning abhijeetvikram,

Sorry I have not replied sooner after you were kind enough to reply to me. It has been six weeks now and the last two days I felt like the pain was slightly better but I cant' walk up or down stairs without going sideways lol I can't seem to put pressure on my knees at all. When I do come down the stairs sideways I get popping sounds and it feels like my knee caps are grinding away. If I sit down for a few minutes then stand up I am so stiff in the knees it brings tears to my eyes. Will that go away? Is there anything I can do to stop the stiffness in my knees? it feels like there is something loose in my left knee on the left hand side towards my thigh. My xrays and bone scan came back normal. You asked for the info below but I don't see all you asked for with the words you used.

1) Total and differential blood counts. (not sure what this means, don't see those words)
2)ESR. 28
3)Sr Uric Acid. (not sure what this means, don't see those words)

Thank you again.

hello dear pixel65,
Tylenol is Paracetamol which itself is NSAID(anti-inflamatory). So you see you are allergic to only some of NSAID's.

You are having a acute episode and NSAID's will help you definately.
As far as your blood test i will like to know
1) Total and differential blood counts.
2)ESR.
3)Sr Uric Acid.

SO tell me soon. regards
abhijeet

abhijeetvikram,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my question. I am allergic to anti histamines and anti inflammatory drugs so I am stuck with Tylenol which does not help me. If I have secondary arthritis will it really go away? It has been 5 weeks already and I am scared the pain will never go. I heard my x ray came back normal. What would you like to know about my blood test?

hello pixel65,
i can understand the agony and pain you are experiencing.I will try my best to help you out of this problem. Let me first brief you about our problem -
Our body reacts to many triggering stimuli. It resembles (though not fully) an allergic reaction. The viral ful stimulated your immune system , and the result is that you have developed secondary arthritis due to viral etiology.
You can wait for the bone scan result, but i am sure it will only say - increased activity in and around the knee joint. This is a common finding in reactive arthritis.
The presence of fluid also points towards reactive arthritis.

Now what to do -

Take some NSAID's like Paracetamol/indomethacin/piroxicam's etc (Not all). Keep a elasto-crape bandage applied to your knee joint 24 hours a day for 2-3 weeks. and give it rest.

And can you tell me about your blood reports.

Hope i have given you some idea about your present condition?
let me know at the earliest about your blood reports as that i can tell you how to proceed further,
thanks
abhijeet
