How difficult is Girdlestone Procedure recovery?

I'm 44 and have been presented with the possibility of having a Girdlestone Procedure.  I just had my 2nd hip implant infection.  Due to childhood cancer, I have had 6 hip replacements/revisions.  Because of the concern of another infection and deteriorated hip bones, my Dr wants me to consider this.  As he says, No Hip - No Infection.  Is my hip fused in this procedure?  How rough is the recovery?  Any help is greatly appreciated.
