Painful clunky hip without movement restriction

I have a painful hip. And it clunks when I walk, loudly enough to hear when I am carrying heavy shopping. However, there is NO restriction of my movement.

I had X-rays recently of lumbar spine, pelvis and right hip. The lumbar spine shows signs of wear but the hips show up as normal. I am 71, so I I suppose I should be glad the X-rays were so good.

BUT the pain in my lower back, hip and upper leg is constant, and it keeps me awake at night. Sometime there is a tendency for the hip to give way slightly, and I have several times only just saved myself from falling on stairs.

My GP gave me co-dydramol and was dismissive. The co-dydramol is useless. I am better off with anadin.

Since my hip X-ray was 'normal' do you have any idea what may be causing the problem? Better yet, can you offer a sloution?

So far all I've got from this site are lots of e-mails advertising a variety of pain-relief products, etc. I am not amused.

I've noticed a good many post that have no response, apart from other posters. I'm wodering if this site is primarily for the purpose of obtaining e-mail addis to send adverts to.

Am I a sourpus? Probably! ;-)

Hm. How often do the medical people look at this site?  I was sort of hoping for some response...
