Regarding Total Disc Replacement
I know that the FDA has approved the Charite for lumbar, and ProDisc for
cervical + lumbar
Yes, I had DDD at L5-S1,(Degenerative Disc Disease) and needed surgery on it. My Orthopedic Dr/ Surgeon suggested the Charite Artificial
replacement surgery-over fusion,( I was told that a fusion at my age27 would have limited my mobility, and there was a bigger risk with a fusion-since a fusion locks the two discs in place there is no movement or flexablitiy. So in a fusion's case, it would put more strain on the upper discs,( in my case L5-S1, in other words ALL remaining Lumbar discs above.
Given my age, a person in his late 20's - 30's more active age group
younger person whose movement is most likely to be an inevitable factor in my daily life, that flexability was a must.
-My point being, if I had a fusion then, ALL the upper discs, mainly closest to that disc that is supporting them, the likelyhood of those discs becoming susceptible to a herniation or other symptoms from the stress of not moving naturally as a group would be almost guaranteed to me later, down the road in life.
it was a
It's mobility was-and still is great, about 4-6 months after rehablitation on it, I was able to actually MOVE around- AND not feel nearly as much pain!
So, I'm thankfull to these advances in science and healthcare, that enable
patient like me to have more options like Artificial Disc Replacement.
- With-out it, my degenerative one would've colapsed my vertibre on top one another, or fusion would have been my only two options.
What I had and had done again was
Intervertebral Disc-Arthroplastic Replacment for Degenerative Disc Disease- ( DDD )
-To anyone considering your options, I suggest getting an opinion from at the very least 3 different types of surgeons- Orthopedic, Neurologist
I hope my explanation and first-hand experience helps someone.
