hi MJ thank you so much for your response. i don't know what a prolapse is. and i've never had a thoratic MRI. i have these pains in my chest upper back arms upper stomach region. i was told i had gerd. treated for gerd supposedly problem still perisists. told its not cardiac had tests done. im' being told its all in my head and anxiety problem. i've had anxiety disorder for over 15 years. i know the symptoms it produces and i realize the symptoms vary and they had varied for 15 years. however this feels very physical in nature. its definetly NOT in my head and its really messing up my enjoyement of life. so what symptoms did you have from your prolapse. i mean exactly what symptoms. did you get the runaround as well?
have you had an MRI scan of thoracic region..do you have a prolapse there? The reason I ask is that the symptoms you get would depend on the level of the prolapse ie T1-4 may produce heart/digestive nerve irritations and T11-T12 leg/bowel/bladder..I agree you need to sort it out and not be fobbed off.It s your body and you know how it functions, The thyroid idea from KL42 looks promising ...I had my problems for 1 and half years..finally got so fed up I wrote the progressive problems down, researched and found ,as it happens. a highly skilled and careful surgeon, and showed him my short but accurate list...and it went from there..I have a major underlying spinal problem that needs surgery (its in a couple of days now).Im telling you this cos I didnt give up..It didnt feel right despite what I was told..and I was right to be worried...go with you gut.. but research your help carefully....
Good luck
MJ
mandyjane46 answer is correct as far as i know.. i also have an enlarged thyriod gland with nodules. which can cause these paputations, maybe you should have your thyriod checked out,, mine was showing normal in blood work until i had a mri on mt thorasic spine due to pain and the tyroid showed up very enlarged incidentally .. kevin
thank you. do you know what other specific symptoms a thoratic disk herniation can cause? i started gettting palpitations about 2 years ago out of nowwhere and have been having strange chest pains almost daily for about a year. needless to say it has freaked me out and made me think i have heart problems. i have had tons of tests done on my heart and have been told by doctors that it is not cardiac. but i'm not convinced. i really need to figure out what is causing this pain and discomfort for so long
Epidural injections I believe are also called facet injections. They inject a localised anti-inflammatory(steroid) into the intervertebral disc site of injury. In some it can solve the problem of irritated nerves caused by prolapsed discs, although it may need several attempts.
in answer to the second question I was told by one specialist that heart palpitations can occur in thoracic disc herniations as this is where the nerves supplying the major organs ie heart and lungs are and so any irritation of these by protruded disc material can cause this. However another specialist advised me that he could not account for the palpitations (I have thoracic herniations) so I cant give you one clear answer on that one.
Does anyone else know the answer to this?
what is an epidural exactly? and what is it supposed to do? and what do heart palpitations have to do with disk herniation?
going in for 2nd of 3 epidural shot tommrow am.. hope this helps out the pain more.. 1st one helped somewhat..hopefully this one really helps. heart paputations a little better was put on coreg
I've had chest pain for over two years that is not cardiac or pulmonary (asthma) I also have back pain, what I think my pain is from is the costal cartilage of my ribs, sternum is being tugged at by my ribs from my back and causing pain, careful strengthening excersise are supposed to help. irritation of costal cartilage is called costocondritis, and yes sometimes it does feellike your going to have a heart attack.
I have a double thoracic prolapse with associated leg weaknesses/pain in ribs and pins and needles.I have definate chest pain which i didnt have before the injury..its not cardiac(tests done)...so Im certain its due to nerve irritation....Ive seen this query of chest pain before and it would be great to get a more definative answer if anyone has one...MJ
i have had chest pain for about 6 months now. i've been told that its not cardiac although i'm not fully convinced. i also have been feeling pain in the thoratic spine region. can this be the cause of my chest discomfort and such?
hi had epidural steriod injection on thorasic area yesterday... still have heart papultations .. bounding in chest was put on cregor by doctor.. due you think this could be caused by hernition of disk or high blood pressue , drugs seem to help a little bit going back monday for follow up.. i think i need a higher dose to control this. what do you think
Hi
Pain is the most common symptom of a thoracic herniated disc. It may be isolated to the upper back or it may radiate along a dermatome (single nerve root). Herniated disc in the thoracic spine may cause pain around the front of the chest or abdomen due to pressure or irritation on the nerves in the thoracic area. The pain may be exacerbated when coughing or sneezing.
Epidural steroid injections are generally are acceptable for herniated disc patients. Though they may not be as effective as surgery (discectomy/ laminectomy) in reducing symptoms and disability associated with disc herniation, yet they are beneficial in providing medium term improvement in symptoms in patients with not much relief after noninvasive methods.
The injections are administered directly in the area of disc herniation. Before proceeding to surgery, one may try epidural injection, after consulting the doctor regarding the relative benefits and risks of the procedure in the individual case.
