Complex Ovarian Cysts....worried

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice/personal stories/comfort/etc.  I went to the doctor complaining of pain each month that was sciatic in nature.  The doctor told me no worries, just sciatic pain, do some exercises.  I was concerned b/c it ONLY happens during my cycle.  And it's getting worse each month.  So I went to the nurse practicioner who seemed pretty convinced it sounded like endo., but said she would like me to see a GYN specialist and have a transvaginal ultrasound.  I had that done and the results came back today; I have two complex cysts (one on each ovary) that are relatively the size of a golfball. The suggestion was to re-evaluate in 6 weeks.  Meanwhile, I see the GYN next week.  I'm totally panicked and scared to death that these will be malignant.....even though the nurse practicioner said the chance is "very low" and still maintains that endo. may be causing this.  My periods are heavy, but this pain ONLY happens during my period and OCCASIONALLY during the middle of my month.  It's horrible and excruciating, but the prospect of cancer is far worse.  I'm 36, no family history of ovarian cancer, and I have two children.  I also have crohn's disease which is medically controlled.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I am 34 and was diagnosed with a cyst at my annual check-up last year. I didn't realize I had it, but once told a lot of other pains started making sense. I had sciatic pain down my bottom that I couldn't seem to get rid of, even with massages and exercise. I also had lower back pain. I honestly thought it was because I was getting older!

So when they did an ultrasound they noticed what she called a complex cyst also with a thick wall. They went ahead and did a CA-125 blood test on me. I was in total shock! Here I was just going for an annual pap, and had an ultrasound and was screened for cancer. I was scared!

They said let's give you three months to see if it will shrink on its own. During that time the CA-125 test results came back normal! So I waited October, November and December. I went back in January and they said it was not shrinking, but in fact seemed to be growing. So I was put on 3 months of bc pills to make it shrink. So I took bcp in February, March and in April. (Please know that really she encouraged me to have surgery and remove it, but I wanted to take a more laid back approach and see if other things worked, making surgery my last resource). I went back end of April and she said it was still growing even on bcpills. So I agreed to have surgery. I had it removed in May of this year. It was the size of a softball! I had no idea! I do have to say my sciatic is cured!! WOHOO!  Surgery was done laproscopically, they sent the cyst to the lab, it turned out to be a hematoma cyst, and it was benign. Surgery was easy, I did stay a night in the hospital and was supposed to take off for two weeks of rest, but I am a teacher and waited until the end of the school year (end of May) and had it.

Good luck! Please ask anything that might help ease your concerns.

I have had a long history of severe Endo and reoccuring cysts of all sorts.  Just keep in mind that most all cysts are benign.  For me, surgery was a huge relief.  I have not been this pain free in 20+ years and I am 39 yrs old.
Good luck and keep us updated.

I used to have a complex cyst 2.5x2.1x1.6cm last month. Not only complex but thick-walled. My Ob-Gyn put me in birth control pills for a month and come back to see her after one month.

This morning, after one month of waiting, I had another ultrasound and my complex cyst shrunk and became simple cyst/follicle.

I was really thought that I gonna have operation because of the word THICK-WALLED, COMPLEX cyst. But I am so glad and thankful to God that the cyst became follicle cyst. Now I have small simple/follicle cyst.

Hope this would help.

The rate of ovarian cysts being benign is 95%, so the nurse practitioner was right.
The gyn will probably do some further test if you haven't already had a Cat-scan and he may order a Ca-125 blood test. The cat scan is used to compare the results of the TV/US and can see some areas in them that the US can't regarding the inside, to see if it's fluid filled or solid, ect. The gyn will know better than the nurse practitioner if they need to come out. Try not to worry yourself so much, the odds are in your favor. There is a lot of information about cysts in the Health Forums at the upper right side of the Cyst community page that may be helpful to you.
Someone who's had a complex cyst will probably read this and add to it with what they've experienced, give it a little time.
