Endometrioma Laparotomy

I'm 19 and I went to my Ob/Gyn a couple of days ago to have an ultrasound done. Apparently I have a large endometrioma on my left ovary that has to be removed via laparotomy due to it size. I was worried about being put under. I'm a bit overweight and heard that larger people have a greater risk of waking up. Is this true?

Hi Brandikbubble.  I know how scary it is to think about going under.  It's kinda funny though because when you come to in the recovery room you will wonder when they are going to start the surgery.  It seems like you just fell asleep and woke right up.  I too am a larger woman and I have had 10 abdominal surgeries in the last 10 years and I can assure you that I have not woken up during any of them.  They weigh you the day of surgery so the anesthesiologist knows exactly how much anesthesia to give you so that you won't wake up during surgery.  We are here for you supporting and praying for you.  Please keep us posted on all that is going on.

ps I sent you a note last night.

Thanks to all of you for helping me to feel a bit better about this. It's good to hear others who've had this say it's no big deal. I found out recently that I won't have to have a laparotomy after all. He thinks he'll be able to remove it via laparoscopy which is of course the smaller surgery. I'll be in and out is what he says, so I'm glad about that. And I had no idea they put a tube down the throat... :( that sounds scary but o well, I'll be put out before that happens. Thanks again to all!

Hi Brandikbubble, dont worry about the surgery your be fine like said above they really take care of you, i dont think being overweight will cause you any probs being put under, i have just had my second surgery in 12mths and have a problen being what they call incubate, thats when they put the tube down your throat, its quite a problem for themon me, but i left it to the experts they are and it was fine. I also have had the lapraoptomy twice and it is a bigger surgery than the laparoscopy to have done and get over but in time you do and feel a different person take care and keep posted x

Glad to hear you are recovering well.  But I totally agree, after going through all the pain I did with the cyst surgery was a relief because it was all over!!  When I had my surgery nearly 18 months ago I was scared like you but having it removed was a huge relief - the pain was over!!!

Hi, my name is Louise and i am 18 years old. i live in the UK. About a month ago, i went to my GP and then for an ultrasound scan, where the doctors discovered i had an ovarian cyst. It was large, 12 inches long and 6.5 inches width ways. I had a laparoscopy to remove the cyst just a week ago, and i have to say i am doing fine. I saw your post and wanted to make you feel better about the surgery. I was scared about being put under as well, as it was my first operation. I see we are similar in age and i could really relate to what you are feeling. really it is nothing to worry about, and if you have been having any of the problems i have with the cyst, you will just be relieved to have it removed! good luck and i hope you feel better soon. i wish you a speedy recovery :) x

Did you have the cyst removed via laparoscopy?

I dont mind at all, first in Jan of 2009 I had an ovarian cyst removed.  Then in december of 2009 I had to have a second surgery because the dr that removed my cyst made a mistake and so I needed surgery to fix me up.

Thanks for the link!  And I really do feel much better about it having seen your comment. It's nice to know that people are nice enough to take the time to reply. If you don't mind me asking, what type of surgery did you have?

Hi, I did some research into this before a surgery I had back in december of last year and found nothing that said larger people have a greater risk of waking up. All the info I found was quite reassuring that the anaesthetic is safe and you will be monitored alot by the anaesthesis.  Heres the links if you want to have a read for yourself: http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_body/medical_care/anesthesia_basics.html#
and:

Im slightly overweight and me personally I've had no worries, didn t wake up until it was all over.  Good luck!
