right ovary mass of 5.2 x 4.8 cm

During a pelvic CT a mass measuring 5.2 x 4.8 was discovered in my right ovary, and was described as "Cannot exclude cystic neoplasm".
What does this mean? Why is my Dr. telling me I must see an OB ASAP? Why the urgency?
I am 56, post-menopausal, and have these symptoms:
lower back deep throbbing pain; some sharp lower abdominal pain; I get hungry, however can't eat much ever; lots of misc. gastro upset; weight gain although many days I barely eat, and really just don't care if I eat or not; generally nauseous, get up at night vomiting, etc.
Any suggestions?
I really would like to know why my Dr's seem to making such a fuss about this. Is there reason for concern?

Thank you in advance for any help/encouragement.

Although most ovarian cysts are benign (non-cancerous) even in post-menopausal women, you do need to get it checked. The good thing is if you do not have a family history of ovarian cancer then your lifetime risk is less than 2% (1.3% per the National Cancer Institute).

Be aware though that ovaries are removed unnecessarily FAR too often despite numerous medical studies showing that the ovaries are needed for every aspect of health. And unbeknownst to most people, the ovaries produce hormones up to at least age 80.

My ovaries (and uterus) were needlessly removed after my gynecologist rushed me into surgery for a 9cm ovarian cyst. Even though the frozen section done in the operating room was benign, my gyn proceeded to remove the rest of my sex organs anyway. All that should have been removed was the cyst (cystectomy). He should have sewn me back up when the frozen section came back benign.

I hope this helps as you move forward. If there is a possibility of cancer, you should see a gynecologic oncologist but you still should be able to keep all your organs if the cyst is proven to be benign. Please keep us posted.
