Complex Ovarian Cyst AND Bicornuate Uterus?

Hello, everyone;

This is my first time here. I am a 32 y/o who, due to some pelvic pain, had a pelvic ultrasound done almost 2 weeks ago. Here are the results of my U/S, and I really need some help with what it all means:

Impressions:  Septated or bicornuate uterus
                    Complex right ovarian cyst

My OB/GYN (brand new doctor to me) tells me the cyst is nothing to worry about, that I should follow it up in 6-8 weeks to check it out. I have an OB/GYN appt. set up with another doctor to be sure what the first doctor says is right. Also, no one, not the OB/GYN or the person who did my U/S told me about the septated or bicornuate uterus result. I had to see that for myself on the U/S report!

I guess my concern, on top of the complex Ovarian cyst (and what that could mean) is a Septated or bicornuate uterus. Are they the same thing? Some sites say they are different, and I can't be sure. What does this even mean? From what I can see, this will make having children very difficult and even unlikely.

Any advice from anyone who has had this, or knows what it means, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ladies,

Thank you for the kind response! It's just wonderful that this site exists for those in the know to help those who are not.

I apologize for not listing the size of the cyst. It was in my report but didn't think to mention it. It says the cyst is relatively small from what I gather - 2.6 x 2.4 x 1.9 cm. Now, I'm still waiting for my "second opinion" appointment with another doctor, so I don't know if smaller is better. I'm assuming it is... am I wrong?

Also, are digestionand intestinal problems common with ovarian cysts? I have been having a lot of loose bowel movements, and I'm not sure if it's related.

Thank you all SO much and have a wonderful day.

Way to go Sharon!  That was a very detail answer that I learned so much from!
Keep up the good job.

All the best to you "firecraker".  I had what 'I beleive' was a chocolate cyst on my ovary last year and that was said to be complex as well.  I believe it ruptured and created a mess as their is a 10 cm blood collection in my right f tube.  I am schedule for surgery in August to remove or clear not just this blood collection but a few fibroids that I had for years but have now grown in sizes and creating problem.

My new gyn did not say my cyst ruptured but I believe it did as I was in so much pain one night I almost went to ER but decide to take a hot bath instead and it helped.  My gyn said the blood collection was due to my period flowing backwards (up).  This I can't wrap my head around but if it is so I am glad the God created other problems (fiborids) for them to find out this one as it may have been like that since I started my period.

Most time, if you are not having problems (bad symptoms of pain, heavy periods etc) the doctors sometimes just do follow ups and or put you on the pills which they did to me to try and shrink the cyst.  Didn't work and I believe the pills created more bad symptoms esp during my periods (extreme bloatedness and pain).  They may have been the cause of my fibriods rapid growth.

Anyway, like Sharon advise find out the size of your cyst as that does determines whether you need to have it removed or not.

Take care,
Jules

"Impressions:  Septated or bicornuate uterus" -  when ur uterus was developing as a baby it was in two "separate" horns that came together ..  for most women the septation or separation subsides for a complete "one room womb" ... in ur case it stayed separate .. u need to contact a gyn or infertility clinic to see how this plays out for u as far s conceiving is goncerned (there are certain tests that can tell them if ur uterus can support conception and then full term pregnancy).. i knew a woman in 1984 with the same problem who delivered a healthy baby to term

"Impressions: Complex right ovarian cyst" - this is where the vocabulary caused u difficulty as they described "complex cysts" as sometimes having septations (kinda like separate compartments) or just a mixture of solid/liquid matter .. too bad they didnt include the dimensions cause (i am a layman and no expert) the size is what usually clues them to ur next step .. perhaps u can call ur doc and get the answer (alot of the time the nurse will look in ur chart and give that to u) .. remember u can always get a second opinion from any other gyn but most time that is an out of pocket expense

probably the best course of action to determine ur next step is to consult a fertility clinic ... or a gyn that specializes in fertility (depending on where u live)  .. god blesws and good luck dear one
