Scared and confused

Hi Ladies,
I am 31 years old and have been dealing with ovarian cysts for over a year now. Aug of last year I was in the hospital with debilitating pain, and that's when I first found out I had cysts. A cyst ruptured and of course that's why I was in so much pain. I have been taking birth control pills for 4 yrs. About a month ago, I was back in the ER with ungodly pain. Same situation, but this time the cysts were larger and I have 7 of them. I switched doctors for insurance purposes, and now I am having surgery next fri, Oct 1st. But, I am having surgery for cysts, endometriosis, and Interstitial Cystitis! They are doing a laparoscopy, and a cystoscopy. I also have a collapsed bladder. I am being told that these surgery's are not major and not to worry. Of course I am scared to death. My doc is puzzled over the fact that I have such painful cysts on birth control pills.. Everything just seems so " we are not 100% sure why ". I have two kids and a husband and I do not know how long the recovery time is or even how serious until they do the surgery. Can anyone offer some insite on this? I know I jumped around, it's just so much going on..
Thanks

Hi Shelly,
The cysts are not large.. Largest being 3cm. I just had a urodynamics test done, not fun at all! They are doing a laparoscopy and I had to consent to a laparotomy. Also they are doing a hysterotomy, cystotomy, d & c. It's alot.

They haven't mentioned PCOS.. Sounds like they don't know the full extent till they do the surgery. He told me today about 2 weeks recovery, unless it becomes more invasive then they are planning.

What are the size of your cysts?   Are they complex or simple?  Cysts that are 5cm or larger and complex warrant a consult with a gynecologic oncologist.  Although most of these cysts do turn out to be benign, there is a small chance that they are malignant.  A gyn/onc has specialized training that can improve your overall prognosis.  The fact that you have seven of them leads me to wonder if you have another condition like PCOS.   It sounds like you are not getting clear answers on the specifics of your surgery.

I feel that any surgery is a big deal.   So, I hope you can get some answers on the size and type of cyst you have prior to surgery.  Endometriosis is a very painful condition and it can cause the type of pain you are describing.  What type of procedure is doctor performing?  A laparotomy or a laparoscopy?  This will make a big difference in the recovery time!
