Recovering from Laparoscopy- When does it get better?

Everyone
Hi, I am so happy I was able to find this community after extensive googling and Jan.  Well I am going to start with some background, and how I got here.  I am 23 years old, and married for 10 months.  I had never had intercourse before until the honeymoon.  I thought it was going to be great, but to my surprise it was soooooooooooo painful, my husband kept saying that it was because I was too tense, but I knew the pain was not normal.  Well, I have never been to a gyn until this past August.  When the doctor examined me, he kept asking if I was getting my period on a monthly basis ( that worried me, I definitely thought that there was something seriously wrong with me.  Well after the examination, ultrasound and finally told me I had a (microperforate hymen- its a hymen with a very small hole, because there is excess hymenal tissue, but can be easily fixed).  I accepted it, and was glad it was something- because I was feeling like I was crazy.  The gyno, referred me to a fertility clinic, and I immediately made an appointment.  I met with the surgeon, who confirmed the microperforate hymen, but acted like that was the least of my problems.  He stated I needed a laparoscopy and a hysteroscopy, because in other cases, when you have a microperforate hymen there are other things going on in there.  (I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks- I almost had a heart attack, the taught of having surgery, just sent me thru the roof) Well, finally after googling non-stop I decided I was going to go through with it.  According to the doctor and nurses this was a "piece of cake" procedure.  (HA) I had the surgery on Friday, 10/17/2008. (Why didn't they warn me of the pain).  1. Sore throat, hoarse voice, 2. burning sensation when I pee, 3. constipation( I didn't go until day 3 and only then pebbles), 4. dizziness, 5.  CRAMPS, 6. stitches pull, 7. Bloating (nothing fits)<--- can not remember all the rest.  And they also gave me "estrace vaginal cream"-- Are they f****** crazy, do they not now I research everything.  This cream has a bunch of SCARY side affects ( I told the nurse that called to check up on me, that "of course I am using the cream"- yeah right).  Today, I had the stitches removed, and I am in more pain.  Okay, so I guess that sums it up.

Questions for Anyone that can help(offer support)

When does it get better?

Has anyone used estrace vaginal cream and how did it go?

I am now scared to have sex after all this, though my husband can not wait.

So happy I found all of you.

Love,

Jani

I did see the post on the ovarian cancer forum- I responded.  You make a great point.  I am extremely dry and also have bladder leakage; maybe thats the reason I was given estrace.  I have an appointment with the doctor in a week, I am going to make sure I ask plenty of questions.  I am going to try the cream and see how it goes.  Thanks for all the information regarding the cream.

Hope you are feeling better

Love, Jani

Thanks for posting.  I was looking into the miralax, but have not taken anything for the constipation yet,  I am back at work and was afraid that I would have to go to the bathroom at work.  My stitches were removed today... The pain is worse than the day of the surgery.  Currently taking 600mg of motrin--It helps a little.

According to the doctor, everything was fine and he did not find any problems.  Not sure why I was given estrogen cream.

I guess I thought recovery was going to be a few days,  doctor and nurse made it seem like the procedure was so simple.

Thanks again

Hi Jani, I see you did post over here! Good for you. I answered your post on the Ovarian Cancer forum, so if you see this one first, check over there, too. As you can see, I am a night owl and have yet to go to bed!

Vallieanne asked a good question regarding the estrogen. I am assuming that you might not have to be on it forever, but it sounds like low estrogen levels in the genital area were a concern and I wonder if perhaps estrogen was not getting to that area effectively because of the issues for which you had the surgery. After menopause many women struggle with bladder issues since the lowered amount (or NO amount for women who had ovaries removed) of estrogen causes that area to atrophy and this changes the shape of the ureter... not fun. I am on supplemental estrogen and testosterone and yet there are some days I still have to practically stand on my head (almost...trying to empty the bladder) to finish "peeing" ...sorry!  But, I also find this totally unacceptable and for that reason alone, I am about to start the Estrace again. I also want to control the bladder leaking I have been having for a long, long time. Overall, for the most part, I am okay, but if I am metabolizing the estrogen I take too fast, I seem to need more in the genital area.

Some women are naturally lower in estrogen than others... sometimes you can even tell by body type. One doctor I researched commented on how he worked with a woman once who was a fashion model... very tall and very slim. She was also depressed. She was given a little bit of supplemental bioidentical estrogen and felt much better because of it. It is such an individual thing. I am convinced, given my body type and the struggles I had with it along with fertility issues way back when, that I was low in Progesterone. I will never know for sure, but after researching this stuff ad naseum, you start to wonder!

Take care,

Mary

I just realized your only 23, why would they give your estrogen cream? Did you have both ovaries removed? Were there cysts on them?
Oh and the bloating is from the gas they use to expand your abdomen during the surgery to have room to work, it takes a while to go away. There's a lot about that on the posts I mentioned.

I'm also recovering from a lap, Oct.6 I had mine done. There is a great post called
'The 10 Things I learned from Laparoscopic surgery on this page. I also just posted the other day and it the one on "Energy Levels' and I got some great answers.. I'm still having a bit of pain and it's a little over 2 weeks, but it's a lot better. Get some Miralax for the constipation, that makes the discomfort worse and once you get moving again the swelling will come down a little and it helps the pain too. You can try some prunes or prune juice too, just don't overdo it.
Drink some peppermint tea for the gas, get something cool for the throat pain. I just drank a lot of cold water and had someone get me vanilla ice cream. That went away after about 5 days, but I'm still a bit hoarse. The day my stitches came out it hurt more but was o.k. the next day.
Read the posts, and if you have anymore questions add to this post.
I'm not on hrt therapy but a lot of ladies are so they'll chime in soon about that, it's also mentioned in the posts.
Rest, take as much time as it takes, and sleep as much as you can.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
Valerie
