surgery by regular ob/gyn vs. gyn oncologist?

Hi, all!

I am having surgery Friday to remove a 6cm complex cyst from my left ovary (I'm 47, premenopausal, having pain and discomfort, normal CA-125 level). Though i know chances of the cyst being cancerous are very small, I'm starting to wonder if it's a mistake having just the regular OB/Gyn do the surgery instead of a Gyn oncologist, as I'm seeing posts around the web that seem similar but have an Gyn oncologist remove their cyst. those who've been in a similar situation, any experience to share?  I think highly of my OB/Gyn but also want to make sure that I'm doing what's best on the off chance that the cyst is malignant.  Thanks for your insight!

Did you have your surgery? How did it go, what was removed, was all benign?

Your experience sounds similar to mine. I was in shock, didn't even know what to ask. My gyn used ovarian cancer scare tactics, said an oncologist would be "on hand' if needed, etc.

Thank you both... I have probably not been as on top of things as I should have been throughout this whole thing. :-/  When the cyst was first found, I was really shocked and scared by his serious tone, taking me back to his office and talking about the possibility of cancer, and I didn't ask enough questions.  At that time, I'm 99% sure he said that the surgery would be done by an oncologist, regardless of the results of the CA-125.  But then when the nurse called to set up the surgery and said it was with my own doctor, I was surprised but didn't really question it (dumb!) other than to just say that I was surprised as I thought I was being referred to someone else... I do trust his judgement, but I was foolish not to ask more.  I have my pre-op appointment tomorrow with him and then the hospital, so I'll clarify and make sure he only removes the cyst and does the frozen section, to make sure it's benign.   (Old_before_my_time, hopefully you saw my response to you on the other thread earlier, too!)

I would hope that your ob/gyn would recommend an oncologist if he thought there was much of a chance of malignancy. At least he is doing it laparoscopically so you don't have much of a scar. My only other suggestion (which I posted on your other discussion) was to make sure he plans on only removing the cyst since the ovaries produced essential hormones into a woman's 80's.
