laparotomy june 28

Im getting explotatory laparotomy removal of dermoid cyst and possible ovarian cystectomy and possible oophorectomy all on my right ovary im really scared because ive never had surgery before. I just really dont know what to expect for before and after the surgery with the whole anesthesia and the pain. I get alot of pain on my lower back and on my leg, ive had irregular periods and hemmorages and im wondering if theyre going to go away after my surgery. Also im really scared for the gas i might get after the surgery since i always tend to be a little gassy. Im turning 21 on July 4th only 6 days before my surgery and oviously i cant do anything "age apropiate". I am wondering if i am going to fell better or more comfortable about 2 weeks after that for my sisters birthday since were planing to go to sea world. I would just really apreciate if you would give me your advice or maybe what youve experienced.

With having a laparotomy, it will be different as its more invasive, and you'll be really limited with what you'll be able to do. Ive had both laparotomy and laparoscopy. I would advise that you maybe discuss this with your doctor about Sea World. 2 weeks after my laparotomy I was in no shape to be doing too much, as everything is exhausting.

Absolutely listen to your body, rest when you need to, dont do any heavy lifting, for the first 3-4 weeks youll be limited and will not be allowed to lift more than a jug of milk( I found a 4L jug too heavy, so used 2L).... Dont try to hold out on using pain meds for the first little while, even if you feel good, take the pain meds regularly to keep pain under control becase once it gets out of control its very difficult and takes a long time to get it controlled again.

For my laparotomy I spent the 24 hours at least, stuck in bed because of a catheter etc. So when you get the chance after catheter is removed, get up and walk! You'll be slow going, but it will help move the gasses around to get my oxygen into you.

And make sure you listen to all the limitations, as frustrating as they are, that you will have for the next month or so post op. it'll be very frustrating but itll be okay.

As for having ovary removal, i hope you dont have to go through that, I did. My doctor told me itll be simple not a problem etc. What he didnt explain was how off the hormones go! It was insane, its only temporary but its very frustrating.

You should also be having a Pre Op about a week or so before surgery, which will have your vitals, blood work, weight, etc all checked out and you'll talk to a nurse, they'll go over the procedure with you, and you might even be able to talk to the anesthesiologist. At least I got to anyway im sure everywhere is different.

Hi I'm having my surgery this week so can't say exactly what's what! BUT from what I have researched and been told u will need to prepare by getting some disposable pants, sanitary towels, pain killers, cold packs, heat packs & pillows for when u cough/sneeze/laugh afterward for first week or so.
Some people find that they are feeling Better a week after where others feel better 3 to 4 weeks after, with regards to the Gas u will feel pain in ur shoulders because of this & u will need to try to walk regulary even if only to door and back to help with gas pains also peppermint cordial is a good drink for afterwards!
With regards to u going to seaworld take adequate pain killers with u and a cushion and be prepared to be exhausted halfway thru!
Take things easy, u will be the judge of what u can and can't do, if u are tired sleep, if u are in pain take notice and stop what is causing the pain and take ur meds I know that sounds like common sense but just LISTEN to ur body, and most of all for the first few days takes pain killers BEFORE the pain starts! Or it will become harder to get under control.
Basically be patient with urself, listen to ur body & take care, things will get better over time (not over night)
Take care :-)
