Big off topic

Something happen today that is bugging me so bad. Yesterday I went out back to let the dogs out, our back yard is fenced in, well my female yorkie kept going to this one spot so I went over there and found a dead bird, my first thought was one of my dogs killed it, so I had my hubby clean it up cause he works for the state and use to cleaning up dead stuff. Anyway about a hour later my dog went to the same spot and I walked over there and saw another dead bird, this time its head was missing (sorry) I thought what in the world is going on here. Today we was planting veggies and then went out front to sit and next thing I knew a black bird just alittle bigger then a small bird so it was normal size was fighting with another bird, I jumped up and ran over there to try to break it up but by time I got there the black bird already killed the other one. That REALLY REALLY UPSET ME. I can't quit thinking about it. I moved the bird out of the road and went to sit back down and the black bird came back and picked up the dead bird and took off. It came back to eat out of my bird feeder a few times and was trying to kill a couple more birds but I chased it off so I don't know if he got them or not.  I was talking to the couple next door and they said they have found 2 dead birds in their yard, what the heck is going on? Why would a bird kill another bird for no reason? I really don't understand it but when the bird food is gone I am not feeding them anymore. I SAW the black bird eating the bird food so why would he kill other birds? Anyone know? I don't know what to do I feel like I have a serial bird killer on the run and I don't want it to happen to another bird but there is no way I can stop it. Any one have any ideas on what to do or how to stop or even WHY this bird is killing other birds???
Thanks
Jamie

I have no clue what kind it is. We live in Ohio tuck. I looked to see if there was anyone I can call but had no luck. Yesterday I ddin't see the bird attacking anything or anyone. I am keeping my eyes out for it tho. I will look into the tree and see if I see anything. I am hoping the killing is done. it hasn't went after us thank goodness. Sorry you got attacked Sherry that had to be bad. I have seen people getting attacked by birds on the news because they walked on the sidewalk by a nest. It ***** when birds get like that cause they are so cool to watch. The bird feeder is now emty just in case there is  nest somewhere around here so no more birds will get hurt.
Thanks

Hope EVERYONE is having a FUN Memorial Day!!!

Jamie,

When my oldest Granddaughter was a baby I used to take her for a walk everyday in her stroller. We'd been doing this for 2 months straight. This one particular day we went a different route and when we got to this one house two birds ATTACKED us!  A gentleman came out on his porch and yelled an apology to us and said that the birds started doing this two day before and that they had a nest in their tree. He said that they had killed 3 birds in the past two days and he was at a loss as to what to do. He said that if we would walk on the other side of the street that SOMETIMES they would leave the people alone. It was very strange and really quite frightening!!

I'm sorry that you're experiencing their predatory behavior. I'd be willing to bet that Tuck is right and it probably has to do with either mating OR they are protecting their babies. They should quit pretty quickly. Like Tuck suggested - MAKE THAT CALL!!

Be careful and WEAR A HARDHAT  when your in your yard!! :)  :).....Sherry

What species of a Blackbird are you referring to? There are many different species of Blackbirds. Their behavior varies a bit but the male can be very territorial and aggressive, especially during mating season.

It is not all that unusual for this bird to be so aggressive. I don't know where you live but many counties or larger cities have an agricultural or animal hot-line. I would give them a call and ask for some advice.

I've heard that loud repetitive noise coming from a predator (man)) can help change their patterns or keep them from the area. I'd make that call.

Good Luck to You,
~Tuck

Jamie,

Wow, that is really strange, and upsetting.  I wouldn't be able to watch that either.  I think you taking down the bird feeder would be a good idea.  That is so sad...

There might be 7 birds total this bird has killed. I know of 5 and then 2 it chased off so I have no clue if it got them too but I am thinking yes. I didn't even want to open  my family room curtains today but as soon as I did there it was just sitting there. I will have to try to call someone cause this is getting out of hand. I keep telling myself it is a female bird dealing with PMS. I am taking the bird feeder down today, I think the black bird hangs out here and waits for another bird to come and then kill it. It don't have a nest or anythign liek that in the tree. Do you know what kind other birds chases the black birds away? I need to get me a whole army of them lol
Thanks

OOOH.  Yuch.  I've never seen a blackbird kill another.  I've seen hawks do that but not blackbirds.  I've even seen birds of different species team up to run off blackbirds.

That really is disturbing.  That would be upsetting to witness.  I wonder who, if anyone, you'd call.  Probably just falls under the wildlife category and all that goes with that.

Probably someone else would know.   I agree that is gross.
