I think it is very wise to get a second opinion.... or even change medical providers. It doesn't sound like your current PCP is listening. Don't wait. You'll be surprised how different life can be when you have a diagnosis and your pain is controlled.

I believe a Physician associated with a large teaching facility or one of our nationally known clinics are often the best in diagnosing, especially when other Providers are stumped.

I assume you are not a good candidate for Pain Management because you don't have a diagnosis. Is that so? PMPs that don't prescribe opiates but do treatments and procedures may be a better choice for you right now. They should see you and help with a diagnosis. But as I said every state is a bit different.

In WI a PMP does not follow or prescribe opiates for Chronic Pain patients. It's the PCP that does that. However they do make recommendations, try different treatments and procedures. They treat pain.

In FL the PCP cannot and does not prescribe for Chronic Pain patients. It's a PMP that does so. However a PMP will not see you without a diagnosis and then that diagnosis has to be able to be documented.... meaning it must be seen on accepted medical tests. Sadly it can't be like a fibromyalgia. At least that's the guidelines in my area of the state.

Learning how NY manages their Chronic Pain patients will be helpful to you. I am sorry that I am not certain.... maybe a member will offer some insight.

I hope something I have offered will be of help to you. Please keep in touch!

Hello Swordblade,

Welcome  to MedHelp's Pain Management Forum. It breaks my heart to hear about your struggle with Chronic Pain. Many of us have been there.... and to say it's difficult is an understatement!!

I don't know in which state you reside.... and that does make a difference when it comes to who treats Chronic Pain.  If you are in a state that PMP exist to treat and follow Chronic Pain patient then I encourage you to request a referral to one. You're right that you need a diagnosis. However Chronic Pain has many causes and not all are easily found or diagnosed.

Have you consulted a Rheumatologist?  If not that may be a good option. I would see only those associated with a large teaching facility or a Nationally known Clinic. .... Those Physicians seem to be on the cutting edge of medical science and more prone to dig in and find a diagnosis.

You deserve to have some comfort and not suffer as you apparently are at this time. Be assertive and don't take "I don't know" or  "Learn to Live with It" as answers. This is your life and you need to take charge and not be dismissed. I know that's easy to say andoften difficult to do... but you must do it if you want some relief. ... and answers.

I can't guess what may be the cause of your pain. I do believe the right the right Physician will have a diagnosis. I assume things such as Costochondritis, an inflammation of the junctions where the upper ribs join with the cartilage that holds them to the breastbone, or sternum has been ruled out. This can induce Chronic Chest Pain.... though it is usually localized.

I hope you'll keep in contact and let us know how you are doing. We're here to offer our support. Hang in there!

Take Care,
~Tuck
