Can my mind help my pain?

A doctor i spoke with recently in my frustrating search for pain relief without narcotics told me about this book....Living the Full Catastrophe"    sounds negative by title but finding it to be very positive in nature..It is about dealing with pain upstairs...controlling it and living life in spite of it...I was like "what the heck"  LOL....cant fix it so may as well do the best i can with it for now....just wanted to share

Good Question, Im a lurker for over a year now but this is the one question that I have been searching for an answer to for atleast that long if not longer.
The mind is an amazing thing and I always thought that if I could heal my mind I could help control my chronic pain for the last ten years and get on with my life.
I see 2 phycs a week along with pain manage doc and have found that it truly works as long as you have a positive attitude and are ready to change your life, just as in AA or NA you have to let yourself go and be ready to work hard, the changes are again for lack of a better word AMAZING !!
I have lost over 60 pounds am going to a gym ( which I still use my cane and no one bothers me ) they keep encouraging me, am going fishing for trout in the middle of the stream and am finaly dating. and yes still taking my meds. 330 lbs in Jan to 272 this morning.
You and everyone can do it but again you have to be ready to work hard shed some tears and have a good support group around you.
Best of luck to you and all others on the site, now I'll go back to my corner in lurker land
(hahahaha)

yey...u get to a point to where u either let it take u over and rule ur life...or u gotta step up to the plate i guess and fight...i find the book to be a good alternative and will study this more...as my other alternatives were not getting me anywhere but depressed and down....positive thing...it is hard..easier said than done...who thinks the mind has anything to with pain control?  I am not sure yet....perhaps others here have more experience...i copped out and became aaddicted to narcotics in the process..found that more painful than my real pain....not everyone develops addiction to narcotics/most do not....just trying to find alternatives and opinions needed

I'm all for trying anything at all that will make my life with pain better.  If it's a book, great!  If it's praying, great!  Meditation, biofeedback, psychotherapy - whatever!  I was so skeptical when my pain doc asked me to try seeing a pain shrink, and it was the best thing I ever did.  Didn't hurt my marriage either.  :-)
