I have been taking 30-40 350mg soma for a little over a year now and I am getting scared of my addiction. How do I taper off this amount?  Please help!

Daisy! I have to share with you!
I, too, had a Soma addiction and just last year ended up in the E.R. from overtaking it! I ended up passing out (not to mention in front of my 12 yr. old daughter, luckily her Dad was home) and having convulsions (I had NEVER had a seizure before, and don't remember a thing about it now). I implore you to tell your doctor that is prescribing it to you. I told ALL of my docs that I became addicted to it and to NEVER write me a script for it (even if I begged and pleaded with them!). It's the only way you will be sure to get off of it.Your doctor will understand (or should, if they are a decent human being) because of the drug's addictive nature. I almost lost my family due to my addiction to Soma, my husband was about to leave with my daughter after that episode. I don't know your social status but even if you are single and have no children you still need to do it for yourself. Please get help before you really do damage; Soma is really a killer and I believe it should be banned.
PLEASE, tell your doctor before it's too late.
Sincerely,
Joyce

You may want to post your question as a new question, sometimes you can get more responses that way and it's not as much pre-reading for the rest of us to get through.

The amount of medication you take really depends on what your pain level is.  It's really only the kind of thing that only a doctor can tell you.  (Unless you're taking 30-40 ppills of anything in one day, that's just too much of anything)  In my opinion, I don't think you're taking too much.  It sounds like you are taking a moderate dose for mild-moderate pain.
It's *usually* only too much if you are taking more than you are prescribed,

Brianne,

I'm glad you found yoga to be so beneficial in combination with your other medication.
Have you tried Thi Chi or  heard of Chi Qong? You may want to check them out if your able, there great ancient asian movements that are known to improve pain and over all health.

I  was taking them for quite a while also and quickly i was taking multiples at a time many times a day also but I found out that the pain got worse when the meds wore off because my muscles tensed and spasm'd all over again worse!! I started doing light yoga to stretch my back and muscles, I wanted relief and a friend suggested that i try the yoga lightly as my body could handle, plus I switched meds to xanaflex which was way better!! I kicked the somas rather quickly in a couple weeks actually because the other meds were working and the yoga was also thank god!! Thats my story hope it helps ya out!!

My trigeminal neuralgia is hurting so bad it feels as though I'm plugged into an outlit and every few mintues my face is getting the schock of my life.  I have lived with TN pain for about 7 yrs.  I've had all the surgeries and got even more problems like Anesthesia dolorosa which is severe in itself.  I just can't seem to get my pain to a state where I don't think I am going crazy.  I've taken tegretol and the meds for TN however, my heart won't tolerate them. I was wondering if anyone has heard of any new medication or surgeries that will help.  Any advice will help. Thank you,

I would talk with your doctor, a lot of doctors know of really good ways to get of certain drugs and how to taper and things to help you cope while tappering.  Were you taking 30-40 daily.  When I was comming of the Soma I was also comming off Vicodin so Im not sure if I had any withdrawals from the Soma,,Im sure it didnt help the whole withdrawal process in general.  My prayers are with you and please keep everyone updated on your progress and do give the substance abuse forum a visit, the people there are wonderful and very understanding.  Take care

Oh my, In my opinion you are taking too much. It defiftly is not helping much if you have to take that amount in the morning. I would consult your Dr. for an alternative to pain control. Soma is good for muscle spasms but not so good if you have alot of pain. Your liver may also be having a hard time processing that much soma. It almosy sounds dangerous. Molly

Yeah, I guess I had a hard time tying to get to sleep after I had stopped. I was more restless than usual but no real physical effects. Taking 30-40 Soma's might be a different story.

There are withdrawal from Soma that I have experienced.  No physical pain like withdrawal from lortab but you do get irritated, nothing tastes good, you CANNOT sleep, your muscles tense and stay tense.  I didn't try a taper, I just stopped CT for a couple of weeks because I had built a high tolerance to them and the amount I was given were no longer working.  I did not experience the depression with the withdrawal as the withdrawal from Lortab.  My biggest problem was just no sleep.  After 2 weeks I started taking them again and my normal dose was too high, I could only take a half at a time and even that would knock me out.  I hope this helps.  If you have any other questions let me know.  I too would like to know what you mean when you said you are taking 30-40 soma's.

You said you take 30-40 soma's. How often are you taking them? I took them for a while but didn't notice any withdrawl but I only took them either late afternoon or bedtime. TMA is right about the Substance and Abuse forum. Mollyrae

Hi Daisy,

You should defenitly check out the Substance Abuse forum because there are some over there who have tapered from Soma.
Just go to the main forums page and look under "A" for abuse, 'substance abuse'
Just click on it and it will take you directly there.
Everyone there is really understanding and knowlegable about what your going through.
Frm what I know, Somas defenitly need to be tapered and stopping cold turkey can cause hallucinations and a bunch of other things you dont want to mess with. So you have to taper, They will know how to help you do that on the substance abuse forum.
But were happy to have you here also and hope you will let us know how your doing.
I hope you will be able to find the help you need to get off them safely.
