the TMJ is the temporal mandibular joint and pain there can be caused by multiple things.  The dental, or orthodontic work doesn't have to have anything to do with tooth pain or dental problems.  It's just that often by adjusting your bite (if off) or by keeping your teeth from touching or "grinding" while sleeping with a guard, you can keep that joint and the muscles around it from becoming tight, tense, or even becoming damaged.  Also adjusting the neck and shoulders (with acupuncture or deep massage) can release the tension and pain in that joint, which then relieves the pain in the ear, neck and shoulder area.

It's all linked together.  So, I wasn't suggesting that you had a problem with your teeth or pain in your mouth - it's just that that joint is best accessed via the mouth, since it's the jaw.  I mentioned my niece - she tried everything, including dental appliances, but got the best result with chiropractic care and deep tissue massage.

People are often surprised by what is causing pain.  You can have pain in your back that is caused by a problem with your feet; (so even though your feet don't hurt, you need to see a podiatrist to solve the problem) or pain in your ear caused by problems in your sinuses, or pain in your leg caused by a nerve losing it's insulation in your brain - (so you don't need to see an orthopedic specialist - you need to see a neurologist), etc.

I can't diagnose what is causing your TMJ - as I mentioned in my original post - multiple disciplines work on the problem - but usually the first doctor seen is a dentist or orthodontist (again - not because you have tooth pain or even any dental or oral problems).  Our bodies are wildly integrated and need to be looked at as a whole.

Best of luck to you - hope you find an answer and relief for your pain.  Blessings, Jan

Hi - sorry you have this, as I too have TMJ, and know how painful it can be.  There are mouth appliances (retainers), and bite guards to reduce teeth grinding at night, which can be causative.  Years ago, they did a surgery for this, filing down the ball of the joint - almost had it done but got pregnant with my son and then it wasn't recommended.

Acupressure, acupuncture, massage, and orthodontia work, are all treatments that are tried.  My niece had good results from chiropractic care.  So, yes, there are several options.  No one treatment will work for everyone.  I'd start with either your dentist, or if insurance or finances allow, one of the other options.

Good luck to you.  Jan
