cervical and thoracic herniations

I am an 18 y/o female, about a 1.5 years ago I was involved in a car accident. And after 1.5 with no diagnosis I just found out I had a cerivcal herniation at C5/6, thoracic herniation T9/10,annular injury and protrusion at C6/7, annular bulging at T7/8 and other cervical bulging discs. The doctors told me me they didn't understand how all of that can missed fo so long after seing more than 10 doctors and having more than 6 MRI'S. The doctors also told me the thoracic region is the risky place to operate because they can accidently puncture my lungs during surgery and it is very uncommon to have thoracic herniations.Since most of the pain is mid back I AM VERY MUCH  considering thoracic surgery. I was just wondering if anybody had a successful surgery in the thoracic region for a herniated disc or any suggestions

Hi Sunshine,

It sounds as if your pain continues, I am sorry for that. I see you would like to keep in touch with Mandyjane. If you haven't already you may want to send her a PM. She may not look at the board for a while. I don't see her here often.

I am glad you are making educated decisions. I have never heard of a Facet Joint Block that doesn't use a steroid, unless they were attempting to temporary disable the nerves.

Good luck to you, Tuck

Thanks so much for replying back to me. What type of surgery are you having for the prolaspe disc? I did not go through with the facet block because I was not at ease with the information I was given. I contacted the doctors office to get more information about the facet block, but no one returned my phone call........so I canceled. I am currently waiting for a surgery consult in PA. GOOD LUCK !!! PLEASE KEEP IN TOUCH!

I was told that steroid was used for my facet thoracic injection but it would remain localised and not affect my weight. It didnt cause gain but it wasnt helpful for me..Im awaiting thoracic spinal surgery for T10-12 prolapses and stenosis at end of month..like you I made the decision that the pain was no longer feasible and I was also advised that I needed to prevent further deterioration..I really researched my field anf found a great neurosurgeon...one who I have 100% confidence in and who has great form.I was told you need this for this area of the back as its skilled work indeed....all the best to you...i feel for you....

Has anyone had success with a facet block from a herniated thoracic disk? My only concern is the physician assistant said that no steriods will be used when going the facet block....my research has so far says steriods are used for the procedure. I had an epidural sept. 2007 and gained a considerable amount of weight and I don't the extra weight on my spine right now, and the epidural didn't even work.

Hello Sunshine,

Wow, how did they miss that injury? I agree that this should have been caught much sooner. I am so sorry you are hurting. And you ask some good questions. You are so young o have this type of surgery and to have this much damage to your spine.

Mollyrae has apparently found a good site.  I also want you to be aware that we have two very good forums on this site, Back and Neck Pain Forum and the Back and Spine Surgery Forum. I suggest that you post your question on those forums.

I understand you must be very tired of the pain and the limitations that can accompany it. It sounds as though you are doing just what I am about to suggest, educate yourself. Yes please become educated about the procedure so you are able make an informed decision. I wish you the very best and please let us know how you are doing. Take care, Tuck

Hello and welcome to MH.

I am sorry to hear of your back problems. There is an excellent web site for Back Surgery and if it's right for you.
BACKS.COM can answer alot of your questions and also give you stories of others that have gone through many types of surgery. I used this site when I had multiple questions regarding surgery. I think you will find it educating.

Take care and good luck,
Mollyrae
