I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in 2007 since that time, i have been taking 2 hydros a day.....the last time i saw my pm dr, I told him I wanted to get off of them, and he told me that I would have w/d I recently got married and moved to a state that it is going to be more difficult to get them, so I am trying to taper off. I am a nurse aide and have to do alot of physical work, so when I need them I need them.
Sometimes Ativan is prescribed to help with withdrawals from narcotics. There seems to be mixed opinions on it. Can I ask why you're coming off? Is there a chance you can taper off? (DIfferent opinions on tapering versus cold turkey as well.)
I'm sure you know the difference between physical dependence and addiction. The physical part of coming of narcotics is the same for each. For addiction, though, there is a need for some sort of support after getting through the physical withdrawals.
No matter whether you're dependent or addicted, you can find lots of helpful information on the Substance Abuse forum. It's helpful even to those who aren't addicted. They have lots of things you can do to help alleviate any withdrawal symptoms you may have.
Since I don't know your circumstances, it's hard to know what to suggest. Lots of things come in to play: how long you were on the meds, the dosage, what your pain condition is (and how you plan to manage that once off the pills,) and more. I think whenever possible it's best if you can come off the medications under a doctor's supervision. They can suggest things and even prescribe other things that may help with withdrawal.
Best of luck and I hope you'll keep us posted on what going on with you. You'll also find support here as there are many CP patients who withdrawn from medications for one reason or another. One thing I will mention is the importance of staying hydrated. It is very easy to get dehydrated if you stop taking your pain meds abruptly. And everything feels worse if you're dehydrated.
